I have a good friend who owns a mom and pop video store in Brooklyn, NY. The Smoke Nazis (i.e., city inspectors) paid him a visit last week. He was cited for not having a "No Smoking" sign prominently displayed (everyone in NY knows there is no smoking in retail stores), for not having issued a policy statement to his employees that "smoking is bad for you, blah , blah, blah," and, my favorite, for "Possession of an Ash Tray." That's right folks, in NYC, you are not allowed to have an ash tray in a retail store because, by golly, that could encourage smoking. The ash tray is there, he explained, in case somebody (perhaps from the wilds of Indiana) came into the store with a lit cigarette, and needed a place to extinguish it when told of the rules. The fines and penalties run into the hundreds of dollars. Welcome to the Nanny State.

Only 800 complaints ? Seems like most people are obeying the law and enjoying the clear air.

800 complaints? Citizens against CITIZENS??!! How terrific is THIS?The restaurants in question really shouldn't have adbducted these citizens, locked them in the restaurants, handcuffed them to a chair, and forced them to eat there. (sarcasm)

The free people of Florida went to the voting booth and voted for this as a constitutional restriction if memory serves me right. Do you have a problem with voting booths and free people?

800 complaints??? In a state the size of Florida????
From experience with the complaint driven compliance system in Delaware, those 800 complaints come from 2 places - the nannyists who shoved this down the throats of voters with their lies - and other businesses seeking to hurt their competition.
The average person just doesn't care - and most people are by nature not SNITCHES.

800 complaints? Citizens against CITIZENS??!! I suspect that same 10 people have filed these complaints, about 80 complaints per zealot.
I eat out a lot in Florida, and most people abide by the rules, since in Florida the weather is nice all year around, and going outside to smoke is no big deal.
Besides, many restaurants and bars have open areas where non-smokers and smokers hang out together.
These whiners need to get a life.

Typical bureacrats - make a law that is unenforcable. Like kids can't smoke - like prostitution is illegal - like gambling on a pool table - like political candiates can not accept cash.

I thought you'd find this interesting:
I did some research recently and found that, ironically, one of the supposed cures for cancer is smoking pot.
(There's also a scene from the movie Stepmom where one of the main characters has been diagnosed with cancer and she's in a public park smoking pot under doctors orders.)
So, to review, smoking causes cancer and smoking also cures it. :)

It's just beginning down here. It's going to get very, very ugly. The smoking Nazis want to use the police force to enforce this law no matter what. I guess protecting airports, ports, water supplies, power substations, and the entire population from terrorism is not as important as those evil smokers.
