Posted on 10/16/2003 9:46:46 AM PDT by pollywog

I chose to put this on Breaking News because it just came on as Breaking NEWS on her website. PLEASE ,PLEASE go to the website http://www.terrisfight.org and read the letters that have just been sent to Jeb Bush in regards to the Terri Schiavo case. JEB BUSH can LEGALLY STOP THIS. CALL his office, CALL YOUR REPRESENTATIVES, CALL and email the media.THE CLOCK is ticking to save her life.

Sorry if this post isn't " polished" and " refined" but I am not a seasoned " poster" here on FR.

Again, irrelevant as regards to my point. If she had filled out a Living Will beforehand, none of this mess would have been necessary

You are right, she didn't and the Judge made a decision on hear say from her husband and nothing else.

What is relevent is that fact that this Judge refused to appoint her a Guardian Ad Litem to represent Terry's rights

I've read them. They are legal opinions solicited by the Schindlers. The state attorney general and the Governor's counsel most likely disagree with those opinions, and they carry a great deal more weight. Sorry. Life sucks sometimes. Your argument is with the Florida Legislature.

Actually, you're wrong. They weren't solicited by the Schindlers. Were they glad they were written? Certainly. But there are many others that have an interest in this case.

Too late for the legislature to have any impact. This is up to the Governor, and quite possibly to the DOJ.

Because unlike your naive presumption, this killing of Terri has nothing to do with mercy or releasing her, and everything to do with paving the way for further abuse of conscious, alive people with brain damage.

I'd call this a little more than damage. I told you, it's GONE. Absent. Not there. The majority of the cortex.

And if you spent the time I do reading the medical journals, especially the letters, you would see this as clearly as I do.

Well you didn't read the NEJM very well, or else you would have realized that Quinlan's autopsy showed that her problem came from the thalamus instead of the cortex.

yeah, that of course would have been ideal. But it didn't happen, as most 26 year olds are, so now we have to deal with what we can do NOW. I can't get hung up on what she should have done. Hell, she shouldn't have married the guy in the first place. But that doesn't mean that her life cannot effect me, or that we can't do what we can now as members of the human family.

You did say that, but you didn't say how you knew this to be true. I am still open to hearing more though.

And oh, I do know about the Quinlan autopsy.

I disagree. Your way would continue to doom her to being chained to a hospital bed, receiving nourishment through a tube. "But she would still be ALIVE"! Well, to some of us, "life" is defined as how we interact with our environment, our experiences, the people we interact with, and our simple pleasures (and even pain), and "life" in a hospital bed like some sort of zombie with no hope of recovery is not "life" at all.

Dehumanization is the trend.

How "human" is it to sentence somebody to some sort of twilight zombie existence, forever dependent on some $12 an hour nurse carrying your next meal in a bag and thinking about that hot date she's going to have after she finishes feeding the "Q" in Room 293?

Where the trend is leading seems to be toward organ "donation".

There is no such "trend" on this side of the keyboard, thanks. And it is insulting that you would think that I would support harvesting people's organs UNLESS THEY AGREED TO IT IN THE FIRST PLACE.

And if you spent the time I do reading the medical journals, especially the letters, you would see this as clearly as I do.

I don't care if you're Michael DeBakey or Hippocrates himself, you still have no right to play God with other people's lives.

Okay, I get your point, now, why would you mischaracterize her reality?

I haven't mischaracterized anything.

Since when did what we currently know in medical science become the last advance of its kind?

I appreciate your points, and I too admire advances in medical science, but we can't make her cortex grow back. Not at this point. That much is known. Most of it is not merely damaged; it's gone.

I meant what I said about optimism earlier. I admire it.

Yeah, we can't have people thinking they can make their own decisions about their own lives, now can we?

Living wills are vastly overrated as a means of determining what treatment options to pursue for many patients. The standard terminology used in them is "no extraordinary means." Let me tell you from personal experience that in many cases involving severe illness, determining exactly what constitutes "extraordinary means" can be excrutiatingly difficult.

HELLRAISER II WROTE TO SMOCKER: "I don't think that anyone here is for Nazi tactics and I for one truly feel for the woman. But think about it, would you want to live like that. Trapped in a body that can't even speak, god forgive me I think I would rather die. I don't feel that wanting her to die is a Nazi act at all, I think she deserves the release from the broken body that she's trapped in. I don't say that to be heartless, I mean for it to be one of empathy because it's truly a heart wrenching matter."

I AM RESPONDING: "What is happening to Terri IS a NAZI tactic!!!!!"

I AM ADDING: "HITLER MURDERED MILLIONS of JEWS and DISABLED people because HE wanted to PLAY GOD and decide who was important and who was not."

As the mother of a SEVERELY mentally and physically disabled 19 year old daughter, who neither walks nor talks, wears diapers, does not feed herself, and once had a feeding tube and was on a respirator with round-the-clock, privacy-eliminating home NURSING for THREE YEARS, I would like to request that you:

Well, to some of us...

Again, you are the one making the statements about what life is, not me. You seem to be the one wanting to play God.

I have only mentioned Terri's choices.

But not to worry. you are in good company. Very soon people like Terri and those kids in the ICU will automatically be assumed dead, as they will have redefined death to include brain-damage and PVS.

My mother's was very specific, and it worked very well. It wasn't what you portray at all.

Actually you are the one who has consistently made your personal feelings known about her life for the last ten years or so.

I only found FreeRepublic 3 years ago.

I have not said anything except to ask you to elaborate about what should be done in the absence of her clear decision about what she would have wanted.

And I answered clearly - that question is answered in the laws that are on the books today, and is being done today.

Now who is playing God?

Certainly not me. And, there's only one other person on this discussion in this thread.

You can trust me 150% on this, if you want to be dehydrated to death when your time comes, I will not come and worry one second about you. Nor will I ever try to stop you.

Thank you. My Living Will is worded in such a way as to make such interference on your part impossible anyway, but its the thought that counts.

My concern is for those who have not said this is what they wanted, and the choice is being made for them.

As it has to be, for they did not have the foresight to file a Living Will. The law is not always the best solution, but it beats the alternative - anarchy.

As well as for the many people who have been forced into death by dehydration even when asking for food and water.

When did Terri Schiavo ever "ask" for food and water?
