When President Donald Trump steps on stage for a campaign rally in Rio Rancho, New Mexico next week, even his own campaign staffers know he will be facing long odds. A Republican candidate for President hasnt won the state since 2004, when George W. Bush beat John Kerry there by a margin of just 5,988 votes. Trump himself lost the state by eight points to Hillary Clinton in 2016 and his disapproval rating among registered voters there is a crushing 57%, according to the Morning Consult voter tracking poll.
Nonetheless, Trumps campaign is betting it can win in New Mexico. Flush with cash, the campaign is planning to announce a state director and additional ground staff there in the coming weeks, a campaign official tells TIME. Internal campaign data has convinced Trumps political advisors they can energize a slice of the states Hispanic voters to vote for Trump in 2020 by emphasizing Trumps handling of the economy, border security and his trade confrontation with China. According to U.S. Census data, 49.1 percent of New Mexicos residents identify themselves as Hispanic or Latino.
The move is part of a series of bets Trump is making to win states that went for Clinton in 2016. Trumps son-in-law and senior White House advisor Jared Kushner says that voter data has convinced the reelection effort to fund robust field operations in a much larger number of states than in 2016. I can see us very aggressively playing in 18 swing states, Jared Kushner tells TIME, adding that in his view, the 2016 Trump campaign seriously played in about 11 swing states.

That’d be great.
Excellent news for Congressional candidates! Put Demons on Defense.
"Fool's Gold" they crowed.
And Trump proceeded to win all three.
So I'm paying attention here.
I worked the 2004 election here in NM, we had volunteers all over the state with copies of our states election laws. I worked in southern Dona Ana county which is infamous for 100% turnout that always votes RAT. We had a bus load of people who showed up five minutes after the polls closed to vote. We refused to let them in under protest from the election officials, we had a US Marshal volunteer from Texas who backed us up. There was similar examples all over the state with the same result.
It was probably the only honest election in the state for decades.
Keep up the good work!!
It would be good if everyone watched “The Battle Of Athens” before the election. It could help set the resolve of precinct workers and other elections workers.
The blatant RAT cheating will be monumental this time around.
New Mexico would make a great 3rd world Banana Republic if you could grow bananas here! We have seen boxes full of uncounted ballots appear out of nowhere almost every election, 2004 was the exception.
So much smarter than the Republican National Committee. I only hope President Trump can whip the national and state parties into action.
They fish up this dummy named “Liam Donovan”, “a Republican strategist”, to say that Trump won’t win any of these states with a 43 pct RCP approval. He had a 37% approval in November 2016. I look up Liam Donovan’s bio, and there is literally no evidence that he ever worked for any actual Republican candidate or part organization. None.
They've already voted, so no interference, right?
Great news, a good offense is the best defense.
