Instead of simply trading in one bad party for a slightly less bad one, frustrated voters need to use this moment to push for credible alternatives.
Last weekends Politico Magazine featured an historical retrospective of the rise and fall of major American political parties during the mid-1850s. Written by professor Joshua Zeitz, a historian and one-time Democratic candidate for Congress, the piece urges Never Trump Republicans to give up on the GOP, cast aside ideas of independence and join the Democratic Party.
While deeply steeped in historical examples and context, Zeitz presents a false dichotomy to erstwhile Republicans. Todays Never Trumpers face a stark choice, he argues, passively acquiesce to the further ascent of Trumpism, or switch parties and play a vital part in stopping it.
Former FBI director James Comey doubled down on this sentiment in a series of tweets this week. Although he once identified as a Republican, Comey has said in the past that the Republican Party had left him behind. Now he's going even further, urging his followers to vote for Democrats if they believe in "this country's values."(continued)

Now is the time for Trump to form a new party for his supporters of all parties to flock to. The Uni-Party vs. The Trump Party.
Yeah Comey was a Republican even though he violated law to protect HRC even before he knew Trump was the nominee. What BS, he’s just another Rat hack.
Maybe he meant leave the GOP(e).
As the dem party makes a hard left; the GOP (conservatives) are making a right turn.
I suppose this keeps the balance intact in a way.
Never-Trumpers are RINO’s anyway so if they left; would they really be leaving the GOP or just coming out of the closet?
90~% of Republicans approve of Trump. It is already his party. Trying to break off would likely be disasterous and end up with him being impeached and removed within weeks.
They need to suck it up butter cup. There is no place to go and it is Trump’s party now.
History tells us the Whig party dissolved in the 1850s, and that the Republican party was established around that time.
Could this happen again? Democrats appear ready to split into the full force socialists and those who are left behind.
We have enough performance data to actually start challenging the notions and accusations of Trump from the Left.
“What Trump policy is empirically harming America?”
“Has the economy improved since Trump took office?”
“Are there more Americans employed since Trump took office?”
“Have average wages increased since Trump took office?”
So, do they hate America and success and freedom, that which Trump stands for? The answer is yes. I believe if Trump suddenly decided that he was in favor of Socialism, Libs would change and want Freedom.
Yeah, they should join the democrats because life was so great during the Obama years.
People may dislike Trump, but no way they want to go back to no jobs, no home equity and retirement plans in the dumps.
I hope Trump has a plan to get some sanity in the schools. With the brainwashing of the left, we’re fighting a losing battle. The young have no idea about socialism, they just want stuff now.
Off a short pier.
They should form their own party! They could call it the RINOs. People will flock to them.
I would love to see President Trump form a new party. Call it the “AMERICAN” party. Those who aren’t in it can be Un Americans which describe the current Democraps and Rhino parties.
Bush League Republicans MUST be removed from office.
We will never get legislation favorable to the citizens until they are.
Ding, ding, dine - we have a thread winnh!
Trump is one of the most likable guys I have ever seen.
You know who is not likable?
Everyone else in government whose name is not Trump.
John McCain, Jeff Flake, Bob Corker, Lindsey Graham, Paul Ryan, Maxine Waters, Peter Strozk... I could go on and on and on and on and on.
To Hell with all of these hysterical insects.
Agreed. Better to continue with the purge of NeverTrumper RINOs and neocons. Meanwhile, picking up working class Democrats doing a #WalkAway from the Democrats.
