Democratic members of Congress react to presidents provocative remarks about North Korean aggression
MANCHESTER, N.H. New Hampshires all-Democratic congressional delegation used terms such as bellicose, chilling, "dangerous and "overly aggressive" to describe President Donald Trumps threat Tuesday to unleash fire and fury on North Korea if its provocative behavior continues.
U.S. Sens. Jeanne Shaheen and Maggie Hassan and U.S. Reps. Carol Shea-Porter said the president should chose his words carefully and act strategically in dealing with the increasingly volatile situation. U.S. Rep. Annie Kuster said his remark may undermine efforts to deescalate tensions in the region.
Trump, during a press briefing at his Trump National Golf Club in New Jersey, responded to a question about North Koreas nuclear capabilities following reports that the rogue nation has succeeded in producing a miniaturized nuclear warhead that can fit onto an intercontinental ballistic missile. He also spoke about the opioid crisis at the briefing, which can be viewed here.
North Korea best not make any more threats to the United States, Trump said. They will be met with fire and fury like the world has never seen.
Then, referring to North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, Trump said, He has been very threatening beyond a normal statement. And as I said, they will be met with fire, fury, and, frankly, power, the likes of which this world has never seen before.
The president's comments also followed a threat by Kim to unleash physical action against the United States and other members of the United Nations after the UN Security Council unanimously passed a measure imposing tough sanctions against North Korea.
Donald Trumps response is chilling, Shea-Porter wrote in a Facebook post. This is a dangerous moment that requires skill, experience and knowledge to deal with North Koreas threats and aggression. He needs to seek out people with those skills. Now.
Hassan said she remains deeply concerned about North Koreas destabilizing actions and nuclear program and supports steps to check their aggression.
But she called it an extremely volatile situation" that warrants steady and strategic leadership from the White House, not dangerous rhetoric that could further inflame this situation.
The President's bellicose reaction does not make our country safer, said Shaheen. "The United States must be measured and strategic in dealing with the threat from North Korea.
On all matters of national security, it's vitally important that the President choose his words carefully," she said.
Shaheen and Hassan also called for continued cooperation with other nations, including China, to ensure the security council-approved sanctions are enforced.
Kuster was more measured in her reaction to Trump's comments, saying "Im concerned that overly aggressive language may only serve to undermine efforts to deescalate tensions on the Korean peninsula.
She called the intelligence reports indicating that North Korea has been able to miniaturize a nuclear warhead "alarming."
"I have confidence in our intelligence community and military leadership and am hopeful that a peaceful resolution can be achieved," Kuster said.
If we attack the DPRK it won’t be with one tiny nuclear weapon. They will be back in the Stone Age, for all intents and purposes.
And should Fat Boy really launch they’ll blame Trump for antagonizing him so it’d be both Trump and the US’ fault.
Well.... now we know what the THREE NEW KEYWORDS are from the latest DNC TALKING POINTS memo.
Maybe they want us to send James Taylor.
Okay...we’ve heard from the soviet Red Hampshire ‘hen party’...now go make a sandwich while the men TCB.
What a bunch of stupid left-wing clueless b*tches.
You can’t appease, coddle or negotiate with a madman.
They were hoping that President Trump would have threatened the NORKs with “sanctions” if they didn’t behave.
That is the language that people like little Kim speak. If you don’t talk in that language, he won’t take you seriously.
Bill Clinton would have given him nuclear reactors to make nuclear weapons.
Wait, that is what happened. Bill Clinton gave N Korea nuclear reactors and Hussein Obama gave Iran a reactor deal so they too can join N Korea in attacking the west.
We needed just one more Demonrat President to finish us all off.
Hysterical ‘Rat wymyns...
Sweet!
Americans...open your eyes and ears....these New Hampshire Democrats are a total disgrace to our entire nation. The entire Democrat Party must be politically destroyed come November, 2018!!! End of story.
Just shut up and watch how a leader leads.
They’d never live like the troops lived on the DMZ when I was stationed in Korea.
1. Fat boy threatens the US with destruction and we get crickets from the RATS, Media and RINOs.
2. Trumps tells Fat boy to back off or he'll get the same and the RATS, media and RINOs get apoplectic about Trump being bellicose and belligerent.
Traitors, you don’t publicly dissent with the POTUS during a crisis. If you disagree fine you don’t do it in a public way. It shows the enemy you are divided. Fools.
Tough (and deserved) talk aside, you don’t as POTUS threaten “fire and fury like the world has never seen” in response to empty verbal threats from a lunatic, which most reasonable people would interpret to mean something along the lines of..
Quit spouting off, or we’ll nuke you.
This situation is volatile beyond anything most of us have seen in our lifetimes. You have one lunatic ruler of a tiny country yanking the chains of a pretty aggressive, take-no-BS POTUS who on his best day exhibits occasional moments of his own erratic behavior - and both I and wife voted for him. (Can’t blame Trump..he’s probably PO’d beyond words at the whole “Russiagate” thing and Congress doing jack diddly and it wouldn’t be surprising if he saw this as the ONE thing he can take care of as commander of the greatest military on earth).
This may not end well gang, chest thumping and flag waving aside. It’s devolving into a giant pissing contest with some volatile personalities involved, and we all know how that can and often does end.
If even one nuke from EITHER side flies, WW3 is not far behind. I for one am not in a hurry to experience that.
What? The Norkies only shot “empty verbal threats” from Norkieland? Those weren’t missiles? Oh what a relief.
No. This idiot Kim is bent on suicide by Trump. Grant his wish. No WWIII. Just a convincing clobber of a dangerous madman.
TRUMPS FIRE AND FURY REMARK IS PROOF HES A MADMAN, BUT BILL CLINTON SAID IF THE NORKS USED AN ATOMIC WEAPON It would mean the end of their country as they know it. And that was firm, manly presidential talk. https://pjmedia.com/instapundit/272356/
