There is a designation in electoral politics, and that designation is "loser". It's not fair, it's not just, it's kinda mean - but it's real. Rick Santorum, for example - great guy, America would be blessed to have him as President, but as long as Presidents are chosen by voting? Forget him. Loser.

There are exceptions - a few. But the exceptions, like Nixon, prove the rule. Nixon's landslide in 1972 never would have happened if George Wallace hadn't won 13 million votes in 1968.

If you lose your seat in Congress, where the re-election rate is higher than the Supreme Soviet in 1965, you are a loser.
