Cruz and the Convention Chess Game
RealClearPolitics ^ | March 31, 2016 | Caitlin Huey-Burns

Armed with newfound, if tepid, support from unlikely sources over the past few weeks, Ted Cruz has touted himself as a Republican uniter whose campaign represents a broad and ideologically diverse spectrum of the party.

But with the GOP aiming for a contested convention in July, there are mixed signals as to whether Cruz is the consensus choice in that scenario or simply the party’s vehicle to Cleveland, only to be ditched later.

While Donald Trump still has a viable path to securing the 1,237 delegates needed to clinch the nomination, a loss to Cruz in Wisconsin next week would make his road longer and rockier. For his part, the Texas senator has shown particular savvy when it comes to delegate strategy, as evidenced by his campaign’s success in scooping up “free agent” delegates in Louisiana last week, catching the Trump team off guard....

Ted Cruz says he accepted Christ at 8 years old.

I would compare Cruz to a chess patzer who can only checkmate his opponents by trying to use the Scholar’s Mate.

Ted Cruz says he accepted Christ at 8 years old.

If his underage drinking and activities in college up to the current campaign are any indication... he has done a lot of backsliding since that time.

If the signals are mixed, it's only because the GOPe is using Ted, and has to string him along to get their "contest". Their intent isn't "mixed". If Trump's not the nominee, Cruz won't be either.

Ted Cruz is not going to be the nominee under any circumstances.

You post a link to a Cruz video recorded when he was 18 like this should disqualify this guy from president?

You have an ID 10 T problem.

What is wrong with you, you nut?

Please tell me the only rational explanation which is you hope to perpetuate the Trump-Cruz animosity to get Hillary elected, because that would make sense.

Otherwise the only help you can offer to any conservative candidate is to disavow all association with him.

Interesting. I hadn’t heard about the pedophile stuff before. Does anyone think there’s anything to it?

What a hypocrite!

I have known a few people who lived squeaky clean lives, and they don’t go around with their noses in the air like a modern Pharisee.

So you are too pure as a Christian to support Cruz, huh?

I would love to hear you go on record that you have not lusted, lied, or ever had too much to drink. Because I know beyond the shadow of a doubt God will not allow you to get away with lying like that.

And I know that you are guilty, because the Bible says that those who judge (i.e. condemn, not discern), do the same things.

But if you are guilty of these things, why do you feel justified in attacking him for them?

I have run into a bunch of people who peddle the “I accepted Christ when I was eight” (or six, or three, or some other nonsense).

In general, I have found it to be a bad sign.

Irrelevant to this election. Cruz can’t win FL, OH, of VA therefore it’s Hillary’s ethics we’ll be living with.

Especially in a political candidate. It's one thing to answer a question if asked. But it's quite another to come across as "peddling" such information.

I would never claim that I have lived my life without sin. Any Christian who makes such a claim is lying. We are all sinners and we all make mistakes.

One thing I do not do is drink, because like Cruz I come from a family which has a propensity toward alcoholism and I have witnessed first hand the devastation it brings. Ted has recounted how both his mom and dad were alcoholics, how hid father abandoned his family when he was small and he had a terrible childhood.

Yet Ted recently told Anderson Cooper that he was a “scotch man” and he looks ten years older than Marco Rubio who is the same age as he is. If you look at his nose without makeup, he suffers from broken corpuscles. He lies all the time and he has few long term friends. Along with his documented problems with alcohol that started at an early age these more recent observations all point to someone with a problem with alcohol.

Ted was married when he was 31 and he and Heidi lived in separate states for the first 7 years of his marriage. The alcohol use combined with all the statements he made about sex in college make it seem very unlikely that he was a saint during at the least his early married life.

Despite admitting that he does not Tithe, Ted has been the candidate who has been over-selling his Christianity during the campaign. Knowing what I do about him and how he comes across to me and my wife make me feel that he is very disingenuous. I feel offended when I see how on one hand how he plays up his Christianity, yet he has been caught lying and cheating frequently during this campaign.

So yes I am a sinner and I freely admit that I do not know what is in Ted’s heart. Yet, I am not a fool either. I have been taken advantage of in the past by people who portrayed themselves as Ted does. If it makes you feel better go ahead and keep calling me a hypocrite. But I am still not going to sit by silently while someone who I feel is a charlatan tries to cheat his way to the most powerful office in the world.

“Cruz can’t win FL, OH, of VA therefore it’s Hillary’s ethics we’ll be living with.”

Cruz will easily take Florida.

Florida leans Republican. It has a Republican governor.

Lots of ex-Cubans their identify with Cruz and agree with his position on Cuba and illegal immigration.

Blacks will still go heavily to whoever the Dem candidate is. But they will not have the enthusiasm they had for the first black president. Fewer black Democrats will turn out to support Hillary. (1.7 million voted in the Dem primary, while 2.3 million voted in the Republican primary. There are more registered Dem voters, but only by a small percentage which is easily made up for the sizable number of independents who lean conservative.)

The only thing that might cause him to lose Florida is if Trump supporters refuse to vote for him because they feel defrauded. Other than that, it is a cinch.

Ohio is a purple state. It has a Republican governor. I assume he will support Trump or Cruz if either gets the nomination. His endorsement may help. It also means there will be some protection against voter fraud. Ohio is winnable. Voter turnout and enthusiasm will be the dominant factors that determine the winner.

Virginia has shifted a little since George W Bush. It is harder to predict. But my opinion is that this election is the Republicans to lose.

If we lost Virginia and New Hampshire but flipped Iowa and New Mexico, and assuming we win the other states Bush won against Gore, it would be a tie (and go to the Republican because the Republican controlled House would break the tie).

Neither Bernie nor Hillary are compelling candidates. Almost any candidate should have a decent shot at beating them barring voter fraud.

Everything is up in the air in this craziest of all primaries. However, one thing is certain—turnout will determine who is the next president.

Good post, fireman15. You seem very sincere. But frankly, I really don't think you need to defend yourself. Whenever someone attacks you unfairly, most of the time they've already made up their mind, and trying to defend yourself is usually just a waste of precious time and words.

I've learned the hard way that in such a situation, the best response is usually no response. Anyway, YMMV. :)

Ted Cruz called Mitch McConnell a liar on the floor of the US Senate, and as long as the Republican Party is in existence, it will not nominate him for the Presidency. Period.
