As we enter the third week of January--just two short weeks away from the Iowa caucuses--it is beginning to dawn even on the most stolid political media figures that Donald Trump is the likeliest bet to win the Republican presidential nomination. It is also becoming apparent even to those most in denial that in the event of Trump's failure Ted Cruz, the most hated man in Washington and 2nd most unelectable of the GOP candidates in November, will almost certainly become the nominee.
Most of the political and journalistic class see the prospect of a Trump/Cruz nomination as so unthinkable that they have spent months denying its very possibility in the face of overwhelming evidence. That's understandable for two reasons. First, the history of recent Republican elections strongly suggests that Republican voters flirt with anti-establishment candidates before choosing the traditionally sober candidate. Those who believe that this election represents a realigning paradigm shift--even if, as with the those who predicted the housing bubble calamity, they are ultimately right--are presumed wrong and unserious by default. Second, the mere notion that a majority of the GOP electorate would walk into a voting booth in cold blood and choose Trump or Cruz as their nominee would upend the accepted journalistic narrative in which both parties are presumed equally extreme, and destructive partisan rancor is blamed not on the will of the voters but on the political culture of Washington.
Still, wishful thinking is finally succumbing to the obvious: it's a two-man race between Trump and Cruz. Each passing day makes the possibility of an establishment comeback increasingly remote....

Liberals like to delude themselves that Cruz or Trump would lose to the Hitlerbeast or the senial socialist Sanders, but we all know that they are terrified of a Cruz or Trump Presidency. They would be either expelled from America or executed, and America would be the world’s only superpower once again.
Trump is a billionaire who does not need their money.
Cruz is a true conservative who can't be swayed on the issues.
This is a nightmare for the GOPe.
For that I am truly tickled.
When Cruz stood up to the media in that one debate he actually became the leader of the force dissing the GOPe.
Yeah, Trump chimed in like the rest of the candidates at that brief moment, but the end result is that the real leader stood up.
And that was Ted Cruz.
Trump has 2 or 3 HUGE meetings where it is a media frenzy and Trump gets to pat himself on the back as to how wonderful and smart he is - look at all the people who adore me.
Ted has the momentum. He has hundreds of small meetings involving the leaders of the base, where the media may show up, however they are not widely broadcasted.
Glad to see Trump has opened himself up to the truth.

The Trump/Cruz ticket is a scam. It will never happen. It is just a way to coax Cruz supporters into thinking a vote for Trump is a vote for both of them. Trump will pick Kasich or Brown.
Trump will pick Kasich or Brown.
Seeing how they’re fighting, though?
I understand that we all get to actually choose between Trump and Cruz. But why the vicious rancor? The fans of either man should lay off the personal attacks against their fellow FReepers who choose the other guy.
I would far prefer adult reasoning as to why you choose one or the other, why the one or the other would be the best choice. Let’s argue over clearly thought out ideas.
Either side is taking a risk with our votes. These two are human men with different sorts of limitations.
Some of us believe that this current “fight” between them is only on the surface, as well. We just don’t know. They may still be a formidable team together one day. Let’s not throw our future out with the bathwater, increasing the level of rancor among us like the oligarchy wants. Don’t satisfy the media and fall into dividing camps that they can control.
Hang in there, listen to each other, argue: but know that except for trolls, the rest of us all want to end up with the same thing. How to do it? This is what we can discuss 24/7.

BTTT sister
Excellent!
Yes, Rubio can win. You think the gopE is just elected officials? All voters are conservatives? More gopE voters than tea party. Cruz and Trump should aim their guns at Marco, not each other.
APPLAUSE
I agree. Trump and Cruz are by far the best candidates. GOPe will be pushing Rubio arguable the worst possible candidate with no experience, parroting memorized answers, with potential scandal looming.
We need the warrior AND the wonk to take back the country.
Check out some of the other current Trump or Cruz threads. Total insanity by both sides. The GOPe is loving it.
Liberal Trump vs Conservative Cruz
easy choice
If Trump picks Kasich, I would seriously have to reassess my opinion of him in the negative direction.
