Republicans Admit That A Trump Or Cruz Win Will Destroy The GOP For A Generation

Republicans are admitting that if Ted Cruz or Donald Trump wins the Republican nomination, they will destroy the GOP for a generation.

Politico reported:

One growing worry about Trump or Cruz, top party officials, donors, and operatives across the country say, is that nominating either man would imperil lawmakers in down-ballot races, especially those residing in moderate states and districts.

"At some point, we have to deal with the fact that there are at least two candidates who could utterly destroy the Republican bench for a generation if they became the nominee," said Josh Holmes, a former chief of staff to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. "We'd be hard-pressed to elect a Republican dogcatcher north of the Mason-Dixon or west of the Mississippi."

"Trump and Cruz are worrisome to most Republican candidates for governor, senator and Congress," said Curt Anderson, a longtime GOP strategist and former Republican National Committee political director. "Some will say they are not worried, but they are."

What Republicans are suggesting is that a Trump or Cruz victory in the Republican primary would wipe out down ballot GOP candidates and incumbents. A Trump or Cruz nomination would be so bad for Republicans that there would be nothing left of their party outside of their red state strongholds.

It could be argued with a great deal of merit that this process began long before the 2016 and that the Republican Party has been shrinking itself down both numerically and geographically for more than a decade. The 2016 election has changed from a contest to between Democrats and Republicans to occupy the White House to a question of whether or not extremist Republicans are going to burn their party to the ground.

Republicans are openly worried about Donald Trump and Ted Cruz destroying their party. At a time when they should be concerned about potentially facing Hillary Clinton or Bernie Sanders in the fall, GOP leaders are instead trying to prevent their party from total collapse.

It doesn't really matter who emerges from the Republican free for all as their nominee. The Republican Party is consumed by internal conflict and a complete lack of unity that they will be the underdog in the 2016 general election. The question isn't can Republicans win back the White House. Instead, Republicans are wondering whether or not they will have a party left after Trump and Cruz get done with them.

It IS true, and it will be the best thing that can happen to the GOPe and the RNC and the USA, and that is that they will be DEAD to the Conservative electorate for many generations. The Republican Party needs to die, disintegrate, and cease to exist. The A-Holes McConnell and Boehner and all of their Cronies should be tarred and feathered, and burn in Hell forever. And it will happen, Cruz or Trump will be President, I hope.

Let’em; it’s time we got some new non “professional politician” people running for office for a change.
Lets get back to the concept of becoming an office holder to serve the people, not yourself or your dynasty.
Farmers, Business People, Ex Military Leaders; people with a proven track record of success and accomplishment.
NO LAWYERS
NO LAWYERS
NO LAWYERS
KILL ALL THE LAWYERS.

“GOP leaders are instead trying to prevent THEIR PARTY from total collapse.”

Now there’s the problem, it’s not THEIR PARTY, it’s OUR PARTY. We just made a big mistake electing them to run it!

In reality GOP moderates have lost the popular vote in all but one presidential elections starting with Bush senior, then Dole, Bush Jr (won 2nd term) McCain, then Romney.
This goes to show you the establishment GOP really I not competitive with their squid like presidential nominees. Their track record sucks!

What is this cr*p about CRUZ destroying the GOP for a generation??? Such nonsense. The only people saying that are the GOP-E and Democrats (who all HOPE it’s true!). Cruz would rally the evangelical vote (like Reagan) and carry the conservative vote as well. I don’t think the Dems can get out the minority vote for Hillary or Bern like they did for Obama. I think Cruz can absolutely take the big prize, AND restore this nation.

At Free Republic, we are in a conservative echo chamber. It is possible that a non-establishment GOP candidate might not win and could cause a rejection of conservative Republicanism down ballot. In that case, the people will have rejected small, constitutional government. In which case, the Republic is likely doomed, because the citizens will have been found wanting.

But, it’s possible, too, that a constitutional conservative might rally the people to his cause, and sweep into the White House with a more conservative Congress ready to get to work, limiting government, restoring it to within its natural constitutional boundaries.

We cannot let the possibility of failure rob us of our nerve. We must grab at the possibility of success of a true conservative with a truly conservative agenda.

Cruz or lose. America.

Well, Josh, even if that were true - and I do NOT accept your premise - you can kinda thank your old boss for it.

The GOPe will never understand, or take seriously, the problem they have created for themselves, or how quickly it could be solved. Embrace the conservative principles you supposedly believe in, and the party will heal in record time. Continue to act like oligarchs interested only in your own survival, and you’ll continue to split the party. If we lose the general election to (shudder) Hillary it will be the fault of YOUR people, Josh, not the Tea Party’s, or anyone else who has had enough of the GOPe’s broken promises and phony “re-election conservatism.”

Elections are not the Superbowl. It does not help us to draft people from the other side and ask them to run wearing a “Republican” jersey. The win only counts if a real conservative scores the goal, not if a RINO gets elected and then makes the government behemoth even bigger.

Hell, there’s enough right here that seem to think either would be a disaster too.<p.Funny how they’re more worried about a Cruz or Trump than another Obama....

“When they say “destroy the party”, they mean that they would lose their slush funds.”

Yes, and destroy the GOPe as a minor version of the Democrat Party.

The only way this would destroy the Republican party is that the ones who have been responsible for its downfall refuse to admit it, refuse to completely overhaul the Republican Party so that it reflects the obvious will and desire of its constituents, and refuse to apologize profusely and often for trying to force us to be Dem Lites.

“I am old enough to remember when nominating Reagan was going to destroy the Republican party.”

(sigh) I remember that too. It’s a shame more people don’t. It seems that the younger generations discount history in their decision making.

Thanks for posting this link.

I basically left our California Republican Party, when their haters tried to destroy Ronald Reagan. I never went back to the local and state party after their treason against Reagan.

I donated directly to his campaign to avoid the leeches getting any money.

We are seeing the same treatment by them to Trump and now to Cruz.

The GOP has already destroyed itself. The only thing that can happen from here is it gets rebuilt and functions properly.
