Sanders: We need 'sensible' gun-control bill
The Hill's Floor Action Blog ^ | October 1, 2015 | Jordain Carney

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is calling for "sensible gun-control legislation" in the wake of a mass shooting Thursday at a community college in Oregon.

"We need a comprehensive approach. We need sensible gun-control legislation which prevents guns from being used by people who should not have them," Sanders said in a statement. "We must greatly expand and improve our mental health capabilities so individuals and families can get the psychological help then need when they need it."

Sanders released his remarks after a gunman opened fire at Umpqua Community College on Thursday morning, killing 10 people.

The Vermont senator, who is running for the Democratic presidential nomination, added that the United States must also "tone down the incredibly high level of gratuitous violence" in the media.

"The shouting at each other must end. The hard work of developing good policy must begin," he said.

Sanders's comments echo remarks from former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is also running for the Democratic nomination. Speaking after a campaign stop in Massachusetts, she called for "sensible gun control measures to save lives."

Any gun control legislation would face an uphill, if not impossible, battle in the Republican-controlled Congress.

A proposal to expand background checks from Sens. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) and Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) failed to get the 60 votes needed in 2013 to overcome a procedural hurdle. A handful of the 54 yes votes were from Democratic senators who have since been replaced by Republicans.

Asked about taking up new gun control legislation earlier this year, Republican senators suggested instead that lawmakers should take time to reflect in the wake of a shooting, strengthen mental health services or crack down on cities that don't comply with federal immigration laws.

But Sanders suggested that Americans are "horrified by these never-ending mass shootings" and that Congress must try to "end this awful epidemic of senseless slaughter."

***Gratuitous, desensitizing violence in the media.***

Reminds me of 1968 after Bobby Kennedy was murdered. The MSM blamed comic books, pulp pocket books, TV violence, toy guns, real guns, army surplus guns, and movies.

SO, comic books toned it down.
Pulp pocket books toned down their lurid covers.
TV shows like GUNSMOKE were downgraded to kiddie shows.
Movies on TV were chopped up to remove “violence”.
The 1968 Gun Control Act was passed banning the import of small foreign guns and 5 shot bolt action army surplus rifles.
Toy guns disappeared from the stores.

But the Movie industry said they would police themselves with a joke of a rating system.
“Hot D*MN! The Hays code is dead! Film ‘em if you got em boys!” Movies were re-shot to add more sex and violence and get the coveted R rating!

Now with cable, TV is worse than ever.

Good catch.
Looks like a scheme to deny ownership to persons who have any government-defined "nutjobs" in their immediate or extended families. Because, after all, those nuts might find a gun while waiting for the Thanksgiving turkey to finish cooking. You know how long those take.

Along that same line I thought of saying to Bernie. I don't "own" that brick but what legislation can you write to prevent me from "using" it right now? The only legislation would be "everyone to jail where no one can hurt anyone".

The Constitution states we have a right to Life. Funny how we keep getting killed by those who have no concept of our freedom to pursue happiness.

Funny how we outlaw murder, yet it still happens. What we need are more sensible murder laws.

Your addendum doesn’t change anything.

You don’t need a license tag, a driver’s license, or evidence of insurance to operate a vehicle on private property.

The only analogue to firearms is a license to carry a firearm in public. But, in most states a background check is required.

Insurance requirements have been floated in a few states, but none have gone anywhere — because the number of crimes committed by someone with a license to carry is statistically zero.

It varies state by state.

Virginia doesn’t require you to have insurance. It does however require you to pay a fee if you don’t have it.

That’s what is has come to. They let the actual criminals out on the streets in order to make room.

I still go back to my earlier post.

Three of the four items he laid out are really worth discussing. I think he deserves credit for bringing them up, and we can/should use them in defense of our own position on the fourth (new gun control measures)

Haven't heard anything bad against Vermont's concealed carry law: "Carry what you want, where you want, and we won't bother you unless you screw up." Makes sense to me, but I carry where/when I want, and and am undetectable, in Ohio.

It gives great peace of mind...

I got yer sensible gun law right here, Bernie:

"A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed"

Suck on that, Bernie.

All those other 20,000 gun "laws" violate that one, Bernie. Anyone: Politician, judge, law enforcement officer*, or prosecutor who attempts to enforce any of those 20,000 gun "laws" is a traitor. A domestic enemy of the Constitution. You leftists all have blood on your hands.

Bernie.

*Yep. I'm sure there are some LEOs who are also members of this forum. Think about it, guys ... who or what holds your loyalty?

sensible

"sensible" gun control and "common sense" gun control mean one thing to anti-gunners - total civilian ownership prohibition. The liberals utopia is a society where ONLY the police and military are armed. The peasants must be completely controlled by the bureaucrats.

uh, no

someone else gets to determine if I qualify for “gun” insurance? Can be canceled and make me a criminal in a moment and creates an amazing data base for who knows who? Not to mention, it is basically another tax!
And, it will not change anything as far as criminals and their guns.

My version of sensible gun control laws would be to require any common core school to mandate gun safety classes that included handling real weapons.

Statistics prove the worth of these classes, any school that is a part of common core has given up its right to decide what they do, and it would be fun to see the liberals freak when they find out they have to do it.

If they would like more sensible gun laws, I think we need armed guards at the school.

Still more? Student/faculty concealed carry at the college level. Faculty concealed carry before that.

Somehow I doubt they really want “sensible” laws... they just want their laws.
