While thousands streamed into a football stadium Friday evening in Mobile, Alabama to see Donald Trump, a much smaller crowd of committed conservatives unwound at a bar and mused over the good, the bad and the unknown of the unlikely Republican presidential front-runner.

They were volunteers and staff for Americans for Prosperity, a non-profit group funded by industrialist billionaire brothers Charles and David Koch, two of the most effective conservative activists in U.S. politics.

According to AFP, 3,600 people came to this year's annual Defending the American Dream Summit from around the country Friday and Saturday, taking in appearances by a handful of the 17 Republican presidential candidates. Trump was not invited...

It would help in headcount, but not address the root problem that so many of the new hires are political tools.

True. Isn’t there a regular switch of those political hacks when a new party takes over. Since trump won’t have a list of donors or bundlers he will have to do interviews to fill spots. Could be interesting

If you’re a single issue guy, then I understand. But beyond one issue, the Kochs are not establishment...and they are the opposite of cronies.....which puts them to the FAR RIGHT of a certain someone in some ways.....

just wait...I got you on the list....to rub it in when the Donald steps in a big steaming pile of liberalism. It may come in the next debate...it may not come til he’s in the White House...but it’s coming. It’s who he is. Deny at your own peril.

Re criticism for Romney changing mind:
...”Over a lifetime I’ve seen many people who don’t change and they always get left behind. Smart people learn things, so they change their minds. Only stupid people never change their minds.”
Trump 2011

We will see who is smart and who is stupid

He may not need them....but they were funding the tea party movement while he was cheering Obama and funding the Clinton Foundation.

Bears repeating!!!

getting to the right answer without ever going thru the deception is certainly at least a LITTLE smarter than someone becoming conservative at age, what, 66?

I’ve learned a lot, but knew instinctively that conservatism was the superior way to order the affairs of a nation.

Bears Repeating!!!

It does, and I have, but no one wants to hear it. This is a big powerful train that's doing some great and needed wrecking....but it's gonna end badly (for conservative limited government Constitution lovers).

Regarding his registering D. In my county for years we had absolutely no republican office holders. In fact many times the primary ballot was almost empty. On the other hand there was always 2 sometimes 3 or 4 running for each slot on the democrat ballot. If I had any choice in who one in the fall a D ballot was chosen in the spring. Yes I even gave former students money for their campaigns to encourage them. They were good kids. Thru the years I continued to work and vote for R candidates. The last two cycles ALL county offices have been held by Rs!
When you live in a D area (in my case KKK) you do what you can to get the best person for the office elected. I understand why Trump did what he did Sometimes it’s voting or supporting the best of the worse to keep the evil from getting control

I think he loves America and knows first-hand how it’s possible to have a wonderful life here. True, he started life living well, but the money he inherited could easily have been squandered in a few years’ time; he managed it well. He’s sick of what the country has become and he has the means and ability to help make that happen.

Beginning in the 1600s, patriots put country ahead of fortunes. Is it so hard to believe someone in this century would do the same?

“Trump is married to a beautiful woman, who would become a spectacular first lady.” She’s accomplished as well as beautiful. She speaks four languages fluently, and was an Architecture major.

I am really disappointed in many Freepers here who do not recognize that this is the political version of the proverbial Trojan Horse. This guy had turned on a dime with his views, What make everyone think that he won't it again?.

I prefer principled conservatives, meaning those who have toed the philosophy for more than a couple years, and will have that same philosophy in the future.

By your post I can see that you like myself have an interest in our 1600’s and 1700’s New England ancestors, Have you read much about their religious and political philosophies? If anything our forefathers were quinteesential conservatives. They stood firm by their principles, and hardly ever wavered. Trump shows none of these qualities.

If my friends and I kept our conservative principles and only supported conservative candidates the Klan would still control our offices. (Including the sheriffs office). Maybe that is alright with you.

Forgot the second half of story

our family have been republicans since ci all war (even had cross burnt in yard ). My nephew was so upset when he moved to NYC with his new bride his MIL sells real estate on 5th ave FIL in garment industry. He knew no one. The R ballot was virtually blank. His inlaws sat him down and explained who had mob , who had Union who was related to whom. It was quite an education for a naive Midwestern xoncervative. Didn’t take long for them to move to North Carolina But there are reasons to change ballots in the spring. And to contribute to candidates running against a devil

Do you realize how disgusting it is linking conservative values to the Klan? Most of the Klan idiots I remember were democrats.

I can't help that your local townsfolk doesn't know how to rid itself of it's lowlifes. Blaming that on conservative values sure isn't going to make you many friends here.

Of course they were Read post again. The Klan had control of the D party. No republicans dare run against them. We crossed over and got them out of power a conservative sometimes must vote for someone other than a conservative to achieve a more lofty goal.
