Why Ted Cruz has more to gain as the presidential election campaigns gear up
The Examiner ^ | July 28, 2015 | Jack Dennis, San Antonio Examiner

Ted Cruz, the first Latino elected to the Senate from Texas and the first Hispanic law clerk for a chief justice of the Supreme Court, has more potential to gain than other presidential candidates as citizens begin to learn more about him. Most voters have yet to hear and see him at this best--when he is debating. While Cruz begins this week preparing for the upcoming debates in August, his opponents continue to worry about Donald Trump's strong momentum.

Often compared to President Ronald Reagan, some of the similarities are prominent. During the 1980 election, Reagan was despised by many in the Republican leadership because he would not go along with their politics and agenda. When he challenged Gerald Ford, the sitting president in 1976, he made adversaries within the party. Reagan went on to win in 1980 and is considered one of the most respected presidents in history.

Like Reagan, Cruz said from the beginning his purpose in Washington was not to make friends....

Reagan took charge of the party by painting in bold colors and eschewing Nuance.

His “let them go their way” speech still inspires me when I’m feeling like conservative politics is a lost cause.

I’d love to see Ted offer a dramatic reading of that speech from the floor ... and wait to give attribution until he was done. My guess is that WaPoHuffPoNYT would all have tweets and articles on the wire before he finished, not realizing he was quoting P40. I can dream...

If Cruz somehow gets the nomination, I think actually think he should run with Rubio. Imagine, two Hispanics, one of whom speaks Spanish fluently. That could bring about a seismic shit in that voting block in 2016.

I agree that the idea has some merit.

However, it would be a poor choice IMO, much like the choice Reagan made.

We could have done better than the Bush presidencies :-(

I think we could do better than Rubio as a VP for Cruz.

Susanna Martinez, gov of New Mexico might be a better choice.

Somebody please get the message to Cruz:

1) Try to reduce the nasality, at least a little bit. It’s not too bad except when speaking before a large crowd. Remember: the microphone makes it unnecessary to raise one’s voice, ever. (A lesson Sarah Palin, and most politicians, have never learned.) Watch videos of Ronald Reagan. He talked the same whether speaking in the Oval Office, or addressing 30,000 people. He knew, in either case, that the REAL audience was at home, ten feet from their TV sets, and they don’t need to be shouted at.

2) Get rid of the stammer!!! E.g.: “A-a-a-and...” and other words stammered at the beginning of sentences. It gets annoying. If you really ARE looking for a word, silence for a moment is BETTER.

Even more so among Democrat politicians.

I think it’s a good practice to pick the best candidate for VP. Rubio is a gang of eight schmuck and a sellout, Susana Martinez implemented Obamacare in her state, Ben Carson doesn’t have the experience to run the U.S. and Carly Fiorina has a mediocre business record. My point is, that we will always be called racists and sexisits by the left, minorties that run for office on the right will always be called sell outs and Uncle Toms, with this fact in mind why would we want to elevate people based on their ethnic background or sex when there are far better qualified candidates? Playing the affirmative action game allows us to pick the weakest candidate to run and is a disadvantage.

Reagan’s 1980 pick of Bush - an example of a conservative candidate picking a GOPe to unite the party and reach more voters in the election.

Cruz picking Rubio would do the same, along with the appeal to hispanics I mentioned.

I don’t think Trump will take second fiddle thus he’s
either the nominee or he’s out.

The only reason we are watching the debate is for Cruz and Trump. Hopefully they will team up and give Jeb a wedgie.

The idea that there are people “Leading”, “gaining”, “winning” (or “losing”) fifteen months before voters start to seriously think about it is ridiculous.

I’ve noticed that Gov. Palin’s voice has become much more modulated recently. The last time I heard her on television she sounded completely different than she did in the campaign days.
