WASHINGTON (AP) Prospective Republican presidential candidates are expected to promote "religious liberty" at home and abroad at a gathering of religious conservatives, rebuking an unpopular President Barack Obama while skirting divisive social issues that have tripped up the GOP.
The annual Values Voter Summit opens Friday in Washington with speeches from several potential presidential candidates, including Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul, Texas Sen. Ted Cruz, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee and Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal. The speaking program features ambitious Republicans with positions on social issues across the spectrum from the libertarian-leaning Paul, who favors less emphasis on abortion and gay marriage, to Huckabee, a former Southern Baptist pastor whose conservative social values define his brand.

Love the scare quotes. Typical.
Where’s Jebbie?
Hopefully Mexico. and stays there
Leftists don’t believe in religious liberty for Christians, just for everyone else.
Was just thinking the same thing. If they don't specifically call out liberty for Christians, including automatic exemption from Obamacare mandates, they'll come off sounding like they want more liberties for muslims.
Yeah. They never put scare quotes around “civil rights.”

From the First Amendment: “Prohibits the making of any law respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion...”
Republicans and America as a whole, especially in the courts, need to define what are “legitimate religions”, for the purposes of applying the First Amendment in court.
That is, it must START by including an absolute prohibition against defining what a religion “is”.
But it then has a very strict limit on when what is called a religion “is not” a legitimate religion, a disqualifier.
“That is, a proscribed ‘real’ activity that is not historical or mythical in character, but is an action demanded of that organizations followers today:
“A legitimate religion *cannot* direct or compel or encourage its followers to commit acts of suicide, or criminal murder or manslaughter against any other persons, within or outside of their organization. To do so means that a court can strip them of first amendment protections as a religion.
“This recognizes that within organizations, there are individuals in authority who will on their own attempt to direct or compel or encourage their followers to commit acts of criminal murder or manslaughter against others, within or outside of their organization, in the name of religious doctrines.
“So it will be up to the courts to determine if this is an individual act, limited solely to that group, an independent sectarian act limited to that sect, or if this act is representative of that organization as a whole; and to carry out sanctions accordingly.
“This may result in those individuals, their group, their sect, or their organization as a whole, if any or all of them call themselves a religious authority or a religion, to be stripped of their First Amendment protections of religion, as well as that of freedom of speech.”
religious liberty - now quotably EVIL! according to the Associated Pi**tards
