A solid third party might find success by appealing to the ‘southern’/’bluedog’/’Reagan’ Democrats and Tea Party types.
Those Democrats have also been sidelined by the liberal take-over of the Democratic Party.
Too many third-party formations, however, tend to be single issue or personality oriented ventures that appeal to a small segment.
Even by winning in states, the general GOP seems to be unable to change its leadership from veering leftward. The GOP leadership seems to be hell-bent on following the liberal Dems over the cliff.

Voters leaving Republican, Democratic parties in droves

WASHINGTON More than 2.5 million voters have left the Democratic and Republican parties since the 2008 elections, while the number of independent voters continues to grow.
