I lived in Concord when he was Lake County prosecutor. I kinda liked the guy, then.
So, we need to either lie about our principles and values, or give them up in order to win?
No.
I lived in Geauga County at the time and liked him as well. Heck, everyone loved him after that trial.
Why? The Democrats became outright Marxists and did just fine in elections. There’s no talk for them to go to the center.
Screw that. It’s time play hardball.
I think 1994 was the last time the GOP could have been considered conservative and it won big.
Yes, you can not defeat Santa Claus.
You are forgetting the seismic shift in “dependent” class size plus influx of under funded immigrants. 2014 America is not in the same ball park as 1994.
Re: “If they want to be Democrats all they have to do is change their affiliation.”
Agree completely.
As things stand today, they spend all their time criticizing Conservatives.
If they joined the Democrats, they could commit all that time to trying to moderate the Democratic Party.
The last time I looked at the stats, there are still a lot more people who identify themselves as conservative than liberal.
Yes, 40% identify as conservatives.
Try winning an election with 40%.
Mittster lost with 47%! (actual % votes he received in 2012)
Do you know what happens to candidates who lose elections?
Ask McCain, Palin, Mitt, Paul, Akin, Angle, Mourdock, Ken Cuccinelli, O’Donnell, George Allen, Joe Miller, Ken Buck,
Alan West, Doug Hoffman, etc....how many laws they have been able to change. Or how many executive orders they can issue.
Liberals are less than 40%. How do they win?
by winning independents and counting on republicans who stay home on election day.
If conservatives outnumber liberals, doesn’t it make sense that more moderates lean conservative than liberal? It seems to me that the GOP is losing at the national level because they love big government and cronyism. They hated Reagan and they hate the small government, opportunity for all, economic growth, and class mobility ideals of the conservative base. Reagan got a lot of crossover votes from Democrats with his brand of conservatism and he had coattails. McCain and Romney lost because they ran as “me too” Democrats with R’s behind their names.
Yes, Reagan showed us the way by being a squishy centrist, didn’t he?
Most of the Moderates are lying to themselves. They are liberals.
Conservatives HOPE people are Informed.
Liberals KNOW people are Ignorant.
Reagan won two landslides by being pro America, pro American, and optimistic. Other than that, he’d been an FDR Democrat most of his life, and held on to most of those principles while being a Republican. As America devolved, he became more conservative by comparison. Along with Jimmy Carter he was a Washington outsider and for the most part, led like one. He’s the extreme example of what the ruling class in both parties hate to the core.
The worst thing I can say about Reagan is that he had to make deals with the oligarchs and dynasties in the GOP, but what choice did he have? Selecting GHWB as his VP was probably the worst thing he ever did. But looking back, it’s amusing how he made GHWB the chief funeral attender throughout the world.
What deity made LaTourette a prophet?
