The very last line Carrey says.
If Eastood really bombed, The Left would not be working overtime to convince us that he did.
When one watches a skilled actor in a fascinating performance, one can become almost completely hypnotized by the performance. You may lose all perception of time and awareness of your body. When this happens, one has entered a hypnotic state of deeply focused attention and heightened suggestibility. This is called nonverbal hypnotic suggestion. It seems like he was able to hypnotize the whole country.
“we dont have to be metal [sic] masochists and vote for somebody that we dont really even want in office just because they seem to be nice guys or maybe not so nice guys if you look at some of the recent ads going out there.
I haven’t seen an “official” transcript, but I heard this line as “mental masochists” which to me made perfect sense. That is, any masochism going on is purely the result of mental gyrations rather than physical torture etc.
The most outstanding thing about Eastwoods sketch is that OUR side did it, instead of having it done to us. I always wished President Bush had fought harder to set the record straight and been more aggressive toward those who attacked him all the time. His style was different, but it still feels good to have someone of Clint Eastwoods stature using the Alinsky tactic of “ridicule, mans most powerful weapon”, against the one many who deserves it the most.
Yep.
Eastwood’s sketch was highly successful in that people are **still** talking about it. And...Just as “**WE** built this!” has caught on , so has Eastwood’s “Empty Chair”.
Clint Eastwood’s sketch reminded me in many ways of Andy Kaufman’s wacky humor with its uncomfortable long pauses followed with a completely unexpected zinger! Brilliant!
I lost it at the F-yourself jokes, and still crack-up on the replays. The audacity to put those words into Obies mouth, when we know damn well that is EXACTLY what he's thinking about Mitt still kills me.
All the little nuances...."....nice guy, or not so nice if you look at some of the recent ads..."
As mentioned, the fact that it's still on the minds of the chattering class tells us all we need to know about its effectiveness.
I think the Left was hoping to use Eastwood as a distraction. Thus avoid reporting on any meat, and portray the GOP as the party of the old.
However, I think it's backfired for many of the reasons in the article. Eastwood's criticism was on target and one that also appeals to the left. By trying to lampoon the GOP over eastwood, the MSM has helped spread Eastwood's message.
Eastwood should hit the campaign trail. He should tell the media what he said Obama was saying to do.
Let’s KEEP those empty chairs out there - in 30 days there will be MILLIONS of them across America.
I'm likewise completely sure that's what he meant, and at the time I first heard him say it, although my ears heard "metal", I immediately assumed he had just mispronounced "mental".
I cannot fathom why even pro-Eastwood reviews miss this. The term has been around for years. There's even a band with that name (heavy "metal", ironically). Google the words "mental masochist" and you get a ton of hits.
