I haven’t seen an “official” transcript, but I heard this line as “mental masochists” which to me made perfect sense. That is, any masochism going on is purely the result of mental gyrations rather than physical torture etc.

Pretty sure you heard right, which is what the (sic) is indicating. I wasn't able to watch the entire segment until morning on Youtube, absent all the spin and I was riveted, enthralled, listening intently trying to figure out the unorthodox presentation.

I lost it at the F-yourself jokes, and still crack-up on the replays. The audacity to put those words into Obies mouth, when we know damn well that is EXACTLY what he's thinking about Mitt still kills me.

I'm likewise completely sure that's what he meant, and at the time I first heard him say it, although my ears heard "metal", I immediately assumed he had just mispronounced "mental".

I cannot fathom why even pro-Eastwood reviews miss this. The term has been around for years. There's even a band with that name (heavy "metal", ironically). Google the words "mental masochist" and you get a ton of hits.
