The controversy over the abortion-rape comments made by Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin appear to be hurting Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Whereas Rasmussen polling showed Romney leading pro-abortion President Barack Obama at the end of July and having Romney leading the race in the Show Me State all year, now Obama has the lead.
The latest Rasmussen Reports telephone survey of Likely Missouri Voters finds President Obama with 47% support to Romneys 46%. Three percent (3%) favor some other candidate in the race, and three percent (3%) more are undecided. At the end of July, Romney led by six percent and he has not trailed Obama in any Rasmussen poll all year.
As the controversy over Republican Senate candidate Todd Akins legitimate rape comment continues, Mitt Romneys lead in Missouri has vanished, Ramussen says. Missouri now moves from Leans Romney to a Toss-Up in the Rasmussen Reports Electoral College Projections.
Obamas Democratic support in the state remains largely unchanged at 96%, and voters not affiliated with either major party still favor Romney by 20 points. But Republican support in Missouri for the partys likely nominee has fallen from 94% in late July to 85% now, Rasmussen continues.
In 2008, John McCain won Missouri on a slight 49.4% to 49.3% margin. Since then, Rasmussen now shows 48% of voters in the state now approve of the job Obama is doing as president, while 49% disapprove. This includes 26% who Strongly Approve versus 42% who Strongly Disapprove. Fifty-one percent (51%) have a favorable opinion of Romney, while 47% regard him unfavorably. This includes Very Favorables of 24% and Very Unfavorables of 27%.
As for their running mates, 44% view Vice President Joe Biden favorably, but 50% have an unfavorable opinion of him. He earns Very Favorables of 19% and Very Unfavorables of 36%, Rasmussen notes. Ryan is seen favorably by 50% and unfavorably 40%, with Very Favorables of 34% and Very Unfavorables of 29%.
Meanwhile, Akin now trails pro-abortion Sen. Claire McCaskill by ten percent in Missouris U.S. Senate race, Rasmussen polling shows, as he has refuses called from leading Republicans and conservatives to step aside so another candidate can take his place as the U.S. Senate nominee.
The survey of 500 Likely Voters in Missouri was conducted on August 22, 2012 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 4.5 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence.
Akin may be the best thing that ever happened to the Democrat party. If he doesn’t withdraw he may earn a footnote In the history books as the guy who wrecked the Republicans chances in this election.
Missouri: Home of meth labs and weak beer.
Also lots of Democrats, homosexuals and peckerwoods.
People are just stupid. Missourians will actually vote for Obama because of this??? I have no words
“...voters not affiliated with either major party still favor Romney by 20 points. But Republican support in Missouri for the partys likely nominee has fallen from 94% in late July to 85% now, Rasmussen continues. “
Akin caused a drop in Republican support for Romney?
The only possible connection I can see is that Republicans were angry at Romney’s overly harsh response to Akin’s retracted remarks.
But my best guess is that there is no connection.
Starve the Beast. I just told the Republican National Committee that as long as they have people as stubborn as this guy in the Party I will send my money to the Tea Party.
God's people need to intensely pray for these folks as well as all the voters in America.
Yep, I find it hard to believe that Missouri would go to Obama because Todd Akin said something stupid.
McCain carried Missouri. All of the projections we talk about in the election have been giving Romney every single state McCain carried, and building up from there. If Missouri could be lost, we need to re-calculate.
If Romney wins, it will be a narrow margin in the electoral college, so every state is critical.

Well, yeah, but you are stating the obvious. Look at who they elected in 2008...
This points out what we are up against. I know one very nice, older woman in my church (in Pennsylvania, not Missouri) who said she heard that Paul Ryan said that some rape was legitimate. She is a "low information" voter who gets her information from the networks and hears soundbites from the Dems. I bet there are a lot of low information voters in Missouri who are convinced that Romney or Ryan said that some rape is legitimate. Or who know that Akin is a Republican and simply tar all Republicans with the same brush -- that they don't care about rape. And the media actively promotes this to keep the Dems in power. And these people aren't morons. They are average people who just don't pay attention.
People who post on these political boards just don't understand how little most of America cares about politics and how little they know about it.
It would be best if the Conservative/GOP movement quit obsessing about Akin, you are cutting your own throats.

It really looks like the best thing would be to mount a write-in campaign with some articulate conservative candidate, and have both Romney and Palin campaign for him or her so that Romney is seen as really rejecting Akin. (We can debate whether it’s fair or right or giving in to the left-wing media another time. The country is at stake. Akin’s brand is damaged beyond repair, and besides pulling party funding something more public is needed so that the ‘Rats can’t uses him to drag the national ticked down — Romney falling in behind a Palin-backed write-in campaign in Missouri would be just the thing. Even better add funding for the write-in from the national GOP.)
I’m with you!!!
Either the poll is the usual BEE ESS, or the state of Missouri is in worse shape than we all thought.
Of course there is no denying they voted for McRascal.

My personal view: The Dems have climbed, reached and now passed their “Akin Peak”. They won’t recognize that fact at first but it will slowly sink in.
Patience is in order.
You seem to be proof of your tag line.
To: Rep. Todd Akin
Fm: Senator Claire McCaskill
Dear Todd,
I can’t thank you enough for bringing my candidacy back from the brink. This plan is unfolding amazingly well!
I urge you to continue with forebearance against the voices in your party to drop out from this race. I couldn’t have picked a better partner to help see me to victory. Remember, we’re in this together, and your rewards after election day will be many!
With much appreciation and affection,
Your biggest BFF, Claire
This is starting to look very convenient. Without delving too much into conspiracy theory, a republican candidate is funded by the democrats in a three way race, succeeds and then makes a unbelievably stupid statement two days before a withdrawal deadline which is allowed to pass by the candidate. Then the poll number switch to Obama. These are machinations typical of the likes of Shumer, Reid and Obama.
Akin may be being paid off.
