Mitt Romney won last night’s Nevada caucus. It’s no shocker: he took the state by 51 percent in 2008 and it’s packed full of Mormons. But the media is predicting a sunny spring for Mr Romney, with likely victories across February. By Super Tuesday in March, he could have enough momentum to knock out Gingrich and claim the nomination.
Newt was not happy with the result. During his concession speech, he lashed out at his opponent's "shameless untruths" and the media's willingness to promote them. He left the podium with a smile. Gingrich lost the Nevada caucus but won his press conference.
The Grinch has reason to be cheerful. The Washington Post points out that delegates are being distributed in proportion to the votes that each candidate gets. That means that, despite his many victories, Romney could still arrive at the convention without the “50 percent plus one” necessary to secure the nomination on the first ballot.
Newt Gingrich made it plain that he sees this fight going all the way to the convention. He told the press that he's happy to win a few headline states and collect enough delegates elsewhere to break even with Mitt in the final count. So long as Romney misses his "50 percent plus one", Gingrich can then force a convention "brokered" by GOP bosses – a fight that he probably presumes he would win. It's an exciting thought.
It used to be the rule that people went to the conventions without a prior idea of who the winner was going to be; primary wins were leverage, not a guarantee of victory. In 1948, Republican contender Thomas Dewey took just two primaries and 11.5 percent of the overall vote. Yet he won the nomination at his party’s convention on the third ballot....

Some damn fine men have emerged from brokered conventions. Garfield, Harding, Coolidge...an argument could be made that Jefferson could be included in that list.
IMO, we’re *always* being played. Like a friggin drum.
The establishment GOP controls the convention. Anyone who thinks a brokered convention will result in anyone except Romney is fooling themselves.
We either win this at the ballot box or conservatism and the Tea Party have been silenced in 2012.

Well, we’re being played again...because we’re ALWAYS being played by the GOP-e crowd.
However, if we all got on the same page, we could make it for real.
If we end up with a brokered convention, with neither Newt, Mitt-Witt, Ricky-Ticky-Tavi or RuPaul able to secure the nomination, we might as well go for broke and draft Sarah Palin for President, and former Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Marine General Peter Pace for Vice President.
Sarah will totally dismantle 0bama in any debate they have, General Pace will reduce Joe Biden to a babbling glob of Jello (which won’t be hard to do).

If both the Newtster and the Mittens delegates don’t fold then both are forced to agree upon a third option, often a person who doesn’t even want the position but also someone who has earned the respect of all.

Maybe someone can explain something: Both SC and FL had delegates taken away (half) because they moved their primary dates against RNC policy. So what does this mean? Does it change the number of delegates needed or just the number of people that can attend the convention and vote for those states?
This whole primary thing is really seriously screwed up!
If we send Newt to that convention with 51% they won’t have much choice.
Newt should not give up . Go all the way, maybe some time santorum will wake the hell up and drop out.
Of course Ron paul will never drop out.
Well, 2DV (happy belated birthday, BTW), we are always being played by these thugs. But...a brokered convention would, at the very least, provide a forum for a discussion about the future of the GOP.
If they can’t renounce their left leaning, centrist BS, and nominate a true CONSERVATIVE candidate, then they will have made the decision much easier for all of us.
The possibility of a strong third party push is a bit unsettling, but the CONSERVATIVE position MUST be given voice.
With the GOP establishment firmly in control, the only way a brokered convention wouldn’t result in Romney being chosen is if they could find a way to resurrect Karl Marx.
I’ve heard it said that Politics is about making you think you have some control. You don’t. The media, Party leaders and the Powers that Be control the agenda. Average voters are sheep to be manipulated. That’s why we need multiple parties, and encourage open political primaries, and eliminate the current ability for the few to control the duopoly.
In Soviet Union they had one Party and had a dictatorship. Two Parties doesn’t necessarily give freedom to the people.
I agree. I suspect alot of folks think that the brokered convention may cause Mitt to choose some red meat rightwinger as VP to appease the conservative base, but I’m not too sure, and I’m not sure it would even matter anyway.

Does anyone truly believe we still have a Two-Party system?
Perhaps my state’s election (Pennsylvania) will be meaningful for a change! It’s usually too late to make a difference.
