Why not a Cain/Gingrich ticket?
us constitution ^ | today | self

Posted on 09/29/2011 1:39:38 PM PDT by Brookhaven

12th Amendment - US Constitution

The Electors shall meet in their respective states, and vote by ballot for President and Vice-President, one of whom, at least, shall not be an inhabitant of the same state with themselves;...

Herman Cain and Newt Gingrich are both from Georgia.

This means that the Georgia electors can only vote for one (not both). Let's say it's a Cain/Gingrich ticket. They could vote for Cain as president, but not for Gingrich as VP.

If the election was tight, then this might mean nobody gets enough votes to be VP, throwing (I assume) the choice of who would be the VP into the Senate.

Wasn’t Newt one of the establishment republicans running around saying the era of Reagan was over?

It’s good to see some creative thinking.

These two have the gonads, the intelligence, and the back ground to actually get things done. Neither, hopefully, would cave to the democrats in fear. Because of the rise of the TEA party, we may be able to keep them on track. These are two very powerful guys.
Newt has baggage, but as VP that wouldn't matter as much right now. People are hurting, and America needs serious people in charge.

Yeah. I'd jump at the chance to vote for this ticket. Cain/Newt. I don't think a team like this could be beat by the MSM.

No. For all of Newt's faults (and they are legion) that isn't one of them.

Actually Newt is originally from Pennsylvania.
I don't he lives in Georgia anymore, I thought I either read or was told he lived in the DC area, Maryland I think.
Depends on where he votes and pays taxes.
Cain/Newt would be interesting, though I personally still have a ways to go with Newt because of him playing “Snuggle Bunnies” with Pelosi over AGW.

Has he ever walked back his support for AGW, it looks very foolish now for such a smart guy!

Because I don't want the couch boy a heartbeat away from the presidency. He would be a great press secretary. A fantastic adviser. But under no circumstances does he get a shot at real executive power.

As for the Cain part of the ticket, OH HECK YA!.

Dream Team.
Cain - President
Ryan - VP

SOS - Bolton
Treasury - Ron Paul (add maniacal laughter here)
Defense - Petraeus
Attorney General - Judge Napolitano
Secretary of the Interior - Sarah Palin
Agriculture - ??
Commerce - ??
Labor - ELIMINATE (Roll into Commerce)
Health and Human Services - ??
Housing and Urban Development - ELIMINATE (Roll into Commerce)
Transportation - ELIMINATE (Roll into Commerce)
Energy - ELIMINATE (Roll into Interior as that already has coal and oil drilling)
Education ELIMINATE
Homeland Security - Chuck Norris (Hey the homeland would be secure)

Chief of staff - Gingrich
Press Secretary - Dennis Miller (The daily briefing rant could be sold on pay per view.)

The Newt of the ‘80s and ‘90s (I was in his district then) would be heavenly.

Unfortunatly, Newt allowed himself to be capture by Washington and became enamored of the idea that the government is the solution to every problem.

Cain said he would pick Romney as VP.

Dumb move. Romney is an opportunist. He'll say what people want to hear in one place, and say the opposite in another place.
The jerk has been training for this for the last four years while everyone else was WORKING. He's gotten really good at faking it!
If Romney wins the primary, it'll be extremely hard , EXTREMELY hard, for me to click that switch on election day. I think I'd get sick to my stomach. He'll be worse than McCain when it comes to back stabbing.

I would also relish the debates between Cain and Obama. It would be like a dad disciplining his naughty kid.

As a former Newt constituent, that is a team for which I’d NEVER vote....Herman needs to stay the heck away from Newt.

No, The VP slot has two purposes. To get some political seasoning for the next generation of president, and to pick up a state.

I don't want Romney as president EVER! And do you think we are we seriously going to pick up Massachusetts? Lets be honest if that is in play you don't have to worry about your VP pick. Paul Ryan has serious potential as a future national leader. He also would bring in Wisconsin, that has been trending more conservative, and will be in play this year.

Why would you saddle Cain with someone that will deprive him of support?

Actually, he could have been saying to Romney, I’ll pick you Mitt for my VP and you can pick me, too.

I think the formula that you should pick a VP that won’t cost you votes would apply here also. So I wouldn’t see Newt, Palin, or Bachmann as all have too high negatives.

I could see a replay of 1980. Reagan wanted Jack Kemp (who was something of a GOP outsider at the time), but the GOP establishment demanded a GOP insider, aka Bush. The story I heard years after the fact was Reagan was told by some GOP higher ups in the party that they had some damning dirt on Kemp and would release it if he was chosen as VP.

If Cain got the nomination, I could see an all out push by the GOP establishment to place a GOP insider on the ticket as VP, including threatening to undermine Cain’s run (just as they threatened Reagan).

Remember, Romney (or his former staff anyway, which is the same thing) worked to undermine the McCain campaign 4 years ago when Romney didn’t get he nomination. So I wouldn’t put it past him (and the rest of the GOP establishment) to do it again.

In reality, the best running mate for Cain would be an old Washington insider that knows how to work the system with lots of foriegn policy experience.

DOOCY: Some comments you made over the weekend I heard replayed on Rush Limbaugh yesterday. Is it true, sir, that you think that the Ronald Reagan era is over in America?

GINGRICH: That’s just objectively a fact.

Hmm... In a close election you could end up with a Cain/Biden administration.
