Mitt Romney whacks Rick Perry over immigration
The Miami Herald ^ | September 2, 2011 | Adam C. Smith

With Rick Perry proving to be a serious threat to Mitt Romney’s presidential campaign, the former Massachusetts governor swung through Tampa Friday to exploit what some Republican see as Perry’s Achilles heal: immigration.

"We must stop providing the incentives that promote illegal immigration,’’ Romney told more than 100 people attending a Republican Hispanic conference in Tampa. " As governor, I vetoed legislation that would have provided in-state tuition rates to illegal immigrants and I strengthened the authority our state troopers had to enforce existing immigration laws."

Romney, 64, never mentioned by name the Texas governor, who leads Romney in most national polls as well as in early primary and caucus state. But immigration is a new issue of focus for Romney in this campaign cycle, and his campaign knows that Perry, 61, is already facing criticism from conservatives for not taking a hard enough line on illegal immigration.

Perry, for instance, in 2001 signed a Texas version of the "Dream Act" that made Texas the first state to allow in-state tuition to undocumented immigrants - much like the bill Romney boasted of killing in Massachusetts.

Illegal immigration remains a hot button issues among Republican activists, though leaders in Texas - where 38 percent of the population is Hispanic - have tended to take a more moderate approach to the issue. Perry, for instance, said last year he had no interest in passing a tough Arizona-style immigration law for his border state.....

I hate to say it, but Romney has a legitimate political point.

It's possible to do EVERYTHING good for the economy (by removing the Feds from the equation) and still LOSE THE NATION to the Hispanic Hordes from the south.

Sure, Romney is more lucky than principled to be to the right of Perry on this.

But he is.

Sibling rivalry made especially funny by the fact that they each have one part of a husband and wife team on their staffs.

Romney is unacceptable. Perry has issues. Sarah is my choice, but until she declares I am simply waiting.

I am patient. Sarah will do what she must. I will be here.

“Perry answered that question about the Arizona law:

purpose. I do have some concerns with the law, and I don’t believe it is necessarily the right approach for Texas, in part because of the new cause of action it provides against law enforcement. Having battled trial lawyers for decades, I am concerned about opening up the courthouse doors to additional lawsuits. But I strongly support the right of the citizens of Arizona, Texas, or any other state to pass laws to protect themselves. In fact, we joined in federal court with eight other states to help defend Arizona against the Obama administration’s lawsuit.

I’m thrilled with any candidate bringing up illegal immigration—and rightly bashing Perry on it.

We allocated an additional $4 billion to the Medicaid program, and more than $900 million to the Children’s Health Insurance Program. I urged legislators to pass a telemedicine pilot program that will enable, through technology, a sick border resident of limited financial means to receive care from a specialist hundreds of miles away. But the effort to combat disease and illness requires greater cooperative efforts between our two nations. It is a simple truth that disease knows no boundaries. An outbreak of drug-resistant tuberculosis, for example, endangers citizens of both our nations.

Legislation authored by border legislators Pat Haggerty and Eddie Lucio establishes an important study that will look at the feasibility of bi-national health insurance. This study recognizes that the Mexican and U.S. sides of the border compose one region, and we must address health care problems throughout that region. That’s why I am also excited that Texas Secretary of State Henry Cuellar is working on an initiative that could extend the benefits of telemedicine to individuals living on the Mexican side of the border.

Bachmann knows she can only be Romney’s VP, no one elses, and certainly not the nominee. That’s why you won’t see her attacking Romney. And of course, Romney has no reason to attack her, since she’s going nowhere fast. Romney was the “presumed nominee”. Now, with Perry, that title is gone. Romney, who is congenitally capable of saying anything on any issue at any time, is just trying to get his title back.

But, for the rest of us, Perry needs to explain his support for in-state tuition for ILLEGAL ALIENS in Texas.

Nothing of the sort was passed and I don’t see where it is stated that this pilot program was going to make residents of Texas pay for residents of Mexico.

All that was being suggested is that we could share medical records across the border via technology.

Right. Romney is a nonstarter and completely unacceptable. As you know, I’m also waiting for Sarah Palin. She’ll own the news tomorrow and likely the next day too.

I could give a hoot so long as the insured pays the premiums.

You’re right. And that’s what the debates are for. In the meantime, I support what he’s done in Texas and what he promises to repeat nationwide.

It’s quite possible Romney cannot get all the necessary work done in that remodeling job WITHOUT using about 3/4 illegals ~ particularly journeyman stonemasons who slip over from TJ city to do exactly that work.

All Perry did was allow children of illegals, who were legal residents of Texas to take advantage of the same instate tuition rates that Texas residents get.

They still pay out of their own pockets.
