Illinois Wesleyan political science professor Tari Renner stopped by Saturday morning to talk politics with Scott Laughlin. Renner thinks Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin have a shot as the GOP nominee in a heavy field. Donald Trump? Not so much. Renner covered it all from the recent lack of voter turnout for the local elections, to Springfield, and more. Hear what he had to say below.

I think Trump is an ass, and would be shown as such by MSM; Palin has been so denigrated from the MSM, she is beyond repair; Cain is a nobody; Barbour doesn't have the fire.
The only potential I can see is Christie from NJ. His problem is he is fat and simplistic Americans love a good-lookin' trim man who can talk sh*t. So he's probably dead in the water, even with his track record of turning NJ around. What else you got? Give me someone with "The Stuff", and can stand up to the MSM, and give Bambi the sh*t due.

I don’t care how big Christie is, you have to look at his record. Sounds like you’re out of the loop on his appointment of a radial Muslim to the NJ Supreme Court, or his endorsement of Rinos during the 2010 election, or how he secretly took money from the feds for the obama healthcare - that’s the real reason he didn’t sign on with the other 26 states.

Yes, I am out of the loop or probably don't have the time to pay attention. The only thing I know about Christie is that he fought the unions and special interest groups and reduced the deficit of New Jersey. Other than that, no, I don't know his positions.
Gingrich I’m counting out. Period.

I'm kinda hoping LTC Allen West may be a dark horse that comes out of nowhere. As much as I love Palin, she has been too vilified by the MSM for so long to get past all that false negativity. Trump will go nowhere. I like his attack on Bambi, but he doesn't have the political acumen.
So who do you suggest at this early stage for the Repub nomination? If you say no one and prefer a third candidate, I got no problem. Of course, we both know it will put the Marxist back in office.
Why have you given up on Governor Sarah Palin? Do you wish to continue having the media dictate our nominees? We had that with McCain, Dole and many others. I am going to raise $2 million dollars for her campaign. If every supporter of hers would only give or raise $100 we could win!! The media have been bossing us around since the 1960’s and before! Swear off their false bull$#*+ and support the best candidate you believe in!!
The way things are progressing I’m almost ready to predict a “president” Biden going in to 2012. Trump is up to something, probably as Hillary’s stalking horse, but still up to something...
As I’ve already said, I know exactly where I am going to be on 1/19/13. In Washington DC, for Palin’s inauguration. And I’ll have my (then) 27 year old son with me. Because the second she announces, he will be on her campaign and bring his young friends with him.
One of the most exciting things in my life was being outside on my son’s balcony (a visit back home to beautiful Cleveland, Ohio) in 2008 and having him motion to me, through the glass doors (and he “mouthed” the words) “Mom, it REALLY IS PALIN!!!” And then he hollered “Mom, you gotta get IN here and watch this!!!”
Both he and I knew who SP was, long before John McCain ever made her a household name.
You know what? I admit I'm no longer up to date on every politico's positions nowadays, but you don't have to be insulting. You can just inform me of the facts I've missed. While I now have a life beyond politics, I'm always willing to listen.

I was involved in street activism and comms with Congressman/Senators way before you ever showed up on this forum, and probably before you even knew about the internal intricacies of politics. I was also Chairman and a founder of Veterans for Constitutional Restoration (VetsCoR on the side bar). I co-wrote the founding Mission Statement. Read it. I was also an original Minuteman. I was long involved in illegal immigration before that organization was created. I could on.
People like you who go to immediate insults are just rude and intolerant. I knew stuff when you were probably trying to still figure out the difference between the 9th and 10 Amendments. Or maybe you were just trying to figure the difference between your Home Room locker combo and your Gym locker combo.
Here's something for you to digest: I was the over-all coordinator for the first FR based event in DC back in 1998. It was called, "The March for Justice". I may not be as informed now, but you don't have to be such a "jackwagon". Learn courtesy and politely inform. I'm always open to new info from an even hand, and that goes a long ways.
