Illinois Wesleyan political science professor Tari Renner stopped by Saturday morning to talk politics with Scott Laughlin. Renner thinks Newt Gingrich and Sarah Palin have a shot as the GOP nominee in a heavy field. Donald Trump? Not so much. Renner covered it all from the recent lack of voter turnout for the local elections, to Springfield, and more. Hear what he had to say below.

BWAAAHAHAHAHA! I LOVE IT! I was over on a Palin..or should I call it a Droolin thread. And got about the same treatment as you.
How the F>ck do these P-icks think it does well for their favorite if they slime everyone who is not? I havent made up my mind yet...although after today..I am not gonna vote for Palin no matter what after the attacks from the Palin crew, and the same for my wife and sister since they’ve got a look at the comments sent to me. So now, there’s three, how many more do they intend on driving away.
I have got to wait and see how these geeks all stand on the issues before I make my choice. Its all smoke and mirrors now.
As for Trump..I dunno, I hasten to guess that maybe he has decided to get the BC thing out of the way first and then move on to the issues. I read that he has a former DNC guy has his handler. So, to me that handler knows some inside info we are not privy to.
I do know this, Trump has really made things lively.
“Palin has been so denigrated from the MSM, she is beyond repair; Cain is a nobody; Barbour doesn’t have the fire. “
-
Oh well then, let’s just all quit.
Sheesh.
Defeatist much?
Just say NO to RINOs and old fart has beens.
NO Newt, Mitt, Huckabee, Barber, and all the other go along to get alongs.
Yeah, I'm going to curl up in a corner and vegetate.
Aren't you the macho guy? I'm simply stating some opinion and of course like many on this site nowadays, you attack me, rather than debate my point.
I was just stating their short-comings. And now with your immediate attack, we can all see your short-comings.
This board used to be about give and take and fair political discourse. But seems every time someone's favorite politico is questioned, it's time for first blood. Gawd, you people are childish.
“you people”?
You mean, those of us who want to win next year, with a candidate we can be proud of, and who says what we believe?
You don’t count yourself among us? You should.
I meant "you people" who have some perverse need to denigrate those who have a different opinion. Very liberal.
"You mean, those of us who want to win next year, with a candidate we can be proud of, and who says what we believe?"
Just stop. Read back through my replies. Of course, I want a good man/woman to win the primaries that I can be proud of to fight in the general election. I have a long history of espousing such.
"You people" on this thread are giving me shit for not believing Sarah can win. I get insults, but no one has yet debated my belief that the MSM has SO vilified her as to make her impotent in a primary or Presidential campaign. This forum is full of zealots who quickly shift into insult mode, much like the liberals do.
"You dont count yourself among us? You should."
Who is "us"? Republicans? Democrats? Conservatives? Liberal Progressives? Who is us? Better question: Who are you? What is your ideology? Tell me that, then we can debate. Fair?
Fair enough.
I consider myself a Constitutional, small-government, small-l libertarian.
Tea party. Pro-America. Pro-RKBA. Pro-defense.
Above all, pro-liberty. I see all of those things, in Palin, and a lot of those things in Trump.
And they’re both lightyears ahead of any recent GOP nominee in their ability to motivate.
They can win. Big. We’ve no reason to be pessimistic.
2012 could be a historic landslide.
What a hypocrite you are. You tell me to learn courtesy, then proceed to call me names. Something which I didn’t do to you. Now, you tell me who needs to get over their f**king self?
Oh, and I supposed to be impressed with what you did in the past? Its hardly a dot on my radar.
And, yes, you may voice your small opinion, and my remark was hardly as rude and condescending as yours.
So, you came on strong only to end up showing what a total jerk you really are.
Thank you, Sir, for being "fair". That's highly unusual to hear.
"I consider myself a Constitutional, small-government, small-l libertarian."
As do I.
"Tea party. Pro-America. Pro-RKBA. Pro-defense. Above all, pro-liberty."
Again, I do, also.
"I see all of those things, in Palin, and a lot of those things in Trump. And theyre both lightyears ahead of any recent GOP nominee in their ability to motivate."
Yes, I understand that, but see too much baggage with Trump, and too much denigration for Palin from the MSM. So I am leary of their chances. That was my only point.
"They can win. Big. Weve no reason to be pessimistic."
I understand, but the media has torn Sarah apart, and I don't think she can overcome that nonsense. Trump is a wild card. Plus, if he doesn't changes his positions on many issues, he won't go anywhere for us conservative/libertarians.
"2012 could be a historic landslide."
I actually think and dream about it being so.
Thank you for talking with me. Sorry we got off to a bad start. We're pretty much on the same page, as they say...haha.
Take care, Sir.
MB is not ready for prime time
So if it`s Palin vs Obama in 2012, you will vote for Obama or you will stay home?
In my family we would say a person that does that will have blood on their hands.
What I think is hilarious is that there are so many R potentials that the media has no idea where to direct their fire. I hope they keep the list long until next summer.
I don’t know if Palin is electable. If she’s the nominee I’ll vote for her. I will agree with you that it’s getting a little tiresome that if you have an opinion that’s not pro Palin here on FR, you get flamed. I’m not coming here as much because of it. I’m a monthly donor and have been for some time, because nothing’s free - thanks Jim. But its getting old watching anyone with an opinion get toasted because they’re not rabid Palin supporters.
None of the three can win the presidency. Newt is just another old GOP retread in the mode of Dole and McCain, enough of these old farts already. Sarah can't deliver the Mushy Middle. The Donald lacks that gravitas stuff, whatever it is. The GOP has not as yet put forward someone who can win. Perhaps later someone will come forward that is a winner. Sure hope so....
Newt would make a great VP for Palin or Trump or a Secretary of State. BUT He lacks the vision thing. The image of him with pelosi is seared into my mind.
“Gov. Christie is a gun-grabbing, pro-Mosque Romneybot.
Thanks for the clarification. I’m sick of hearing people talking about the conservative Christie. He’s conservative for NJ but RINO everywhere else.
Sarah Palin knows the msm is armed and ready for an ambush she may be pulling a Carlos Hathcock on them?.One shot in the scope.
In city college in 1980 my polisci professor picked Carter. Talk about stuck on stupid.
