The race for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination starts in earnest this week at the annual Conservative Political Action Conference in Washington.
Too early, you say? On the contrary. With the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary only 12 months away, it may soon be too late for anyone who wants to run for president to begin the hard work of raising money, recruiting a staff and wooing Republican activists.
So let's get started. Here's the conventional wisdom, fresh from the corridors of power, on the state of the Republican race:
There are really only two spots on the GOP ballot. One is reserved for Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who won nine primaries in 2008. The other is for someone who isn't Mitt Romney someone like Sarah Palin, Mike Huckabee or Tim Pawlenty.
Romney has been running for the nomination the old-fashioned way. He has raised more money than any other hopeful ($6.3 million for his political action committee during the last two years). He spent most of last year collecting IOUs as he helped Republican candidates across the country win House and Senate seats. He's the solid front-runner in polls in New Hampshire, the first primary election state.
If the Republican Party worked the way it used to, Romney already would be the presumptive nominee....

Third parties are for losers but if we get McCained again hopefully a Conservative Party candidate is on the ballot in 50 states.
“Why does that pile of crap get one of the spots?”
Gotta give Obama credit. He doesn’t want Obamacare. He wants another 4 years of mandates without the permission of congress and SCOTUS.
Why would the RATS want Romney when they can destroy him based on RomneyCare. A failed program that if done at the national level would destroy the country.
Obama is going to pivot to the middle negotiating away ObamaCare one item at a time. One item I am willing to bet is only one of a hundred that are going to be tossed over the next 18 months.
Romney needs to be taken out soon.
BS
ROMNEY SUXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX. Please excuse my raw language, I only use when absolutely necessary.
TOTAL BS!
I'm not Mormon nor, by any stretch, am I a Romney supporter, but your bigoted rants about the Mormon religion are quite offensive. Are you sure you wouldn't feel more comfortable at some site like Stormfront? FReepers might be conservative, but we're not bigoted haters.
I voted for McCain and obviously wasted my vote. I won’t waste the next one but if I do it’ll be because I’ve voting my choice and the RNC’s choice.
Mitt Romney: Turning America into New England...
Unfortunately, too many boot-lickers on FR are more than happy to facilitate it.
Palin wouldn’t do that, would she? Palin/Romney? Yikes. I shudder to think of that man being one heartbeat away from the presidency. But what a deliciously disorienting ticket that would make for the dems.
Preemptive clarification. I would hate having Romney on the ticket. Cain, West or Bolton would all be better VPs.
That’s not going to happen. It is monstrously difficult to get ballot access for third parties. I know. Ive been through the process. You’ll never enough states on board in time to get the electoral math to work. We have to get our candidate through the Republican primary gauntlet or we lose the presidency again. It’s really that simple.
I’m just saying, if one of those spots really is reserved for Romney...I’m going to do what I can to make sure it’s not the top one.
I will second that one.
;) Now that’s funny!
-Mormons are not Christians.
-Mormons don’t worship Jesus Christ as the Son of God/Man
-Mormons say that Jesus and satan are brothers
-Mormons worship in temples
-cults are modeled after mormonism
How come I just knew that if I looked at your previous posts I would find out that you also are an anti-semite?
That you have been on Free Republic this long with your bigotry is most disappointing.
There's a cult called Mormonism, it's a blight on both Judiasm and Christendom. Judiasm is a formal religion worthy of respect and praise. Mormon-ism is a conspiracy and a war crime!
