The multipage brochure was set to tout the official endorsements of the California Republican Party, delivering the party's stamp of approval on down-ticket candidates and ballot measures to Republican voters' mailboxes across the state.
But the glossy mailer, a staple most election years, never made it out the door.
The voter communication piece was tabled after disagreements erupted over control of the mailing.
With Republicans in California on the verge of suffering a Democratic sweep of statewide offices, GOP operatives are grumbling that the party and Meg Whitman's gubernatorial campaign failed to deliver on their promises to boost GOP candidates to victory in a year the party seemed poised for big wins.
Republican officials and the Whitman campaign have blamed a "blue riptide" in a traditionally Democratic state for that party's performance at the polls.
To some, the phantom mailer is symptomatic of a GOP campaign effort that was not as coordinated as it should have been.
"The fact of the matter is we have to do a better job networking all the Republican-affiliated groups going forward," said state party Vice Chairman Tom Del Beccaro, who added that he was not aware of the tabled mailer and is running for party chairman in the spring. "This election exposed some of the weaknesses we had in that regard, and going into a presidential election and the enormous opportunity related to (redistricting), we're going to have to step up our capacity dramatically."
