Ahead of his meeting with the Republican leaders this week, President Obama today warned them the era of just-say-no is over.
The GOP opposed nearly every initiative Obama and the Democrats offered and sometimes passed over the last two years.
The were so successful at casting those policies as job-killing bailouts that were deadly to the economy that voters on election day still believed by a two-to-one margin that the economy was shrinking, bailouts were ongoing and their taxes were going up even though the opposite was true.
With the GOP gaining greater say in the Senate and taking over the House, Obama thinks theyll have to play the game differently over the next two years.
Campaigning is different than governing, Obama told reporters as he flew home from his 10-day Asia trip this afternoon, suggesting Republicans will walk back some of their more adamant rhetoric in coming days as they take stock of reality.
They are flush with victory after a campaign of just saying no, Obama said. But Im sure the American people did not vote for more gridlock.
Still, on the Sunday shows today members of the GOP did not sound in a very compromising mood yet unless the President wants to start on their side of the issues.
Sen. Jim DeMint (R-S.C.), a favorite of the Tea Party crowd, signaled he would not accept a Democratic compromise of extending some of the Bush-era tax cuts those for the middle class.
But he said hed be willing to talk if the President is at least offering a temporary extension of all tax cuts, including for the wealthy.
I think if he can work on our side of the ledger, I think we might can work together, DeMint said on Fox News Sunday.

“Campaigning is different than governing,”
I bet he found that on FreeRepublic using his Blackberry.
He can’t even get enough respect over seas to get his parking pass stamped but thinks when he takes a piss the Republicans should wipe.
He can go to a very hot place IMO.
Of course he wouldn’t call out his own party members as being the party of no, with majorities in both houses.
“campaigning is different than governing...”???
How the heck would he know? Feet up on the Resolute Desk do nothing turd. Filthy...that’s all he does!!!
The sad part is that the Republicans will probably agree with him.
If the Republicans have any sense at all, they will try to force Obama to veto, veto, veto things -- or else pass our agenda. That whole "party of No" idea has to be killed or reversed.
What a load of crap. My taxes have gone up (sales tax, school tax, property tax) and my fed income tax is set to go up 6% (loosing child credits and an increase of 3% tax). And the stimulus is still being spent on crap. But I guess I am imagining all of these things.
I can't believe McCain managed to get reelected. I wonder what drugs are in Arizona water? They are voting as bad as people do here in CA IMO.
No stupid. They voted for an repudiate your program, repeal the health care abortion, stop the headlong rush into socialism and punish the politicians of both parties who refuse to listen to their voices. But if the alternative is more of your crap, they'll take gridlock and love it.
I'm afraid we did, Mr. President. The only action we want to see is the undoing of the damage you've been able to do. We can undo the gridlock after getting rid of you and 13 rat senators in two years.
No Dumbo, we voted to stop you and your communist party dead in it's tracks.
God, this tool is SUCH A FLAMING HYPOCRITE....
Probably because Hispanics voted for Juan “RINO” McCain over JD Hayworth in the primaries, who was the lesser of two evils in their eyes.
“Obama: Just-Say-No is Over”
That’s great - I hope the republicans make him keep his word as they start introducing legislature, such as:
- repeal that health bill monstrosity
- extend the Bush tax cuts
- secure the borders and deport illegals
- stop paying people for not working (or encouraging them to work on the side and still get unemployment benefits)
- rein in the epa and global warming regulations
- support israel
- fight jihad
Guess again, 0dumbo!
Yeah, they tend to vote more liberal especially if they are first or second generation poor people.
They voted to gridlock YOU.
But Im sure the American people did not vote for more gridlock.
He actually is deaf, blind and dumb. That’s exactly what we did. Gridlock just might save our country.
