May 21, 2003 -- ALBANY - A statewide revolt by bar owners against the state's smoking crackdown caused Quick Draw profits to plummet 18 percent after many tavern owners turned off the game in protest, The Post has learned.
The protest cost the state more than $200,000 in revenue in a single day.

I don't smoke anymore, but I think these bar and restaurant. owners should keep it up until these clymers repeal this rediculous anti smoking law. If you don't smoke don't go into a bar or restaurant that allows smoking. Make it a purely voluntary thing. That is the American way

The Lottery is one of the biggest scams foisted on the public. Where does all this money go? The Lottery is always touted as a measure to reduce taxes, but it never seems to work. It's simply one more way to line the pockets of state politicians and bureaucrats. I'd like to see some hard data which demonstrates that these lotteries actually live up to their hype.

"They say the bill will hurt their finances - so they pick a protest that hurts their finances. It's the most ridiculous thing," Grannis said.Labor unions do this all the time and is known as striking. Of course, a union controlled Democrat would never acknowledge it.

I expect NY will pass a law mandating that all Quick Draw games remain on at all times. Perhaps they can even mandate a daily quota for each establishment...if the patrons don't hit the quota the bar must make up the difference.
To: tdadams
Hapeman said that not only might Quick Draw players try to find other establishments not participating in the protest, but the bars receive 6 cents on every $1 spent on Quick Draw in their places.
Whoopie! 6 cents!
All the way, you guys, from Central NY

But Hapeman and Assemblyman Alexander "Pete" Grannis (D-Manhattan), who sponsored the law, said the protesters are not only harming the state's finances, but are also hurting themselves. I can see how concerned Grannis is for the financial stability of these private enterprises. < /sarcasm >

The lotteries in WA state never have lived up to their hype. They were sold on the basis that the money would go to schools and roads. It didn't take the legislature but a couple of years before they started diverting the windfall into the general fund to pay for condoms for prostitutes and needle exchange programs.....

Next the "Liberal" taliban control freaks will ban music (leads to deafness, and why should
they have to pay
your medical care and social program costs!?!!) and kite flying.
Control! Control! Control! "Liberals" will love the taliban when they succeed in bringing it to America. They just want to set the rules; that's all.

I'm surprised the smoking ban is even enforced in some of these places in upstate New York. Local police probably know the bar owners well enough that they won't even bother them, and there aren't enough state police to enforce it.

I have never smoked in my life but I am so SICK of the anti-smoking Nazis that I'm tempted to take it up!

I'd rather keep my clientelle than have a lotto game.

Take the stupid machines out permanently! This is such an infringement on personal property rights. If I was a bar owner I would be very upset. Smokers everywhere should gather up their butts and dump them on every State Legislature's desk who voted for this!
