COLUMBUS (AP) -- The state is considering tax increases to help balance its budget and has warned agency directors that more spending cuts also may be needed early this year, Gov. Bob Taft's budget director said.

Any tax increases to help plug a hole in the current budget probably would be on alcohol or cigarettes, director Tom Johnson said Thursday. However, any tax, including sales and income taxes, could be considered for possible increases in the next two-year budget.

Cali might take over the top spot (we just hate losing it). Dimbulb Davis is trying to tck on an additional 1.10 per pack. It's all good though. The good folks in Nevada will be more than happy to see an increase in sales from the folks who go to Vegas or Reno.

Hmmmm? Advise to smokers. Vote RED (GOP) !...

Sorry to disgree........

Ohio has gop leadership in the legislature, and in the governor's office.

(and has for some time now)

The gop has proven themselves to be no different than the demos.

Government gets bigger every year, taxes go up every year.

Hmmm? Sorry to hear that Ohio has poor GOP leadership/RINOs/whateverTheHeckTheProblemIs. Of course you always have the right to vote for 'RATS if you want. I don't think that's what you're implying, but I know I won't vote for a 'RAT.

President Bush, ex-Texas governor, is for smaller government, not bigger government. He feels that Americans should keep more of their own money, not less. The Ohio GOP should get with the GOP program, and quickly I'd say, lol...

I can't say as I blame them. As a happy vacationer/customer (one-time Lake Tahoe skier) I'd say...good for Reno or Las Vegas, lol !

Democrats also favor bigger government. So, like you, I cannot vote for democrats.

President Bush, ex-Texas governor, is for smaller government, not bigger government. He feels that Americans should keep more of their own money, not less.

I don't believe that.

The federal government grows ever larger each year.

The amount of money collected (taxes) and the anount spent also continue to increase.

New restrictions placed on the freedom of Americans and useless regulations continue to be implemented.

$50 a month in 2001? pointless, symbolic at best.

The current "tax proposal" will end up as some compromise bill with a barrel full of pork and no end to the IRS.

SheLion, NJ's excise tax is really $1.59 a pack. That $1.50 excise tax is also subject to their sales and use tax of 6%. Taxing the damn tax. How's that for adding insult to injury?

The 2001 tax cut was a phased in 10-11 year deal. This year Bush proposes to bring it more FORWARD to get them effective now or SOONER and to make them permanent.

I can't disagree about the pork and increased spending.

The military spending, however, for the war on Terror in Afghanistan and the pending Iraq operation I don't have any problem with, btw...

OK...this might prove that I've 'lived under a rock', but we just got our state forms for taxes. In the back of that booklet, it says that if you've made any out of state purchases during 2002, via internet,TV/radio ads, catalogs, or directly from an out-of-state company, that you are supposed to pay Ohio taxes on it.

When did this go into effect? Our tax preparer has NEVER asked us questions pertaining to that...so I'm thinking it's a 'new' law.

I guess it's been a around for some time...never paid any attention to it myself. Personally, it's none of Bob Taft's damned business as to what I buy or where I buy it. Also, there is a constitutional problem with trying to collect sales tax on out of state sales...something about congress regulating interstate commerce and NOT any individual state. The state weenies can stamp their feet all they want, but the US constitution trumps any state law (supremacy clause).

In short, ignore that line on the Ohio income tax form...like everyone else does.

LOL!!!

You're right.. it ISN'T any of their business. It's like having to declare something at the Canadian border then having to pay duty tax.(or however it's worded)

Ohio...the heart of it all...just LISTEN to that huge sucking sound!

Thanks for the reply.

Wouldn't it be something if they stopped spending money they didn't have.

It would REALLY be something if they would quit wasting a lot of the money that they DO have. Case in point. While the weenies are crying because there isn't enough tax money coming in and they will have to raise taxes AGAIN, for the 2nd year in a row, they somehow found $2.25 MILLION DOLLARS to spend on 88 bells, one for each county in Ohio. Here is a link to a story that doccumnets this waste of money

The RINO's flush a lot more than that on a regular basis. Even under a budget shortfall, they can waste that money while pushing a number of tax increases. And his desire to "reform" the tax code or get rid of tax "loop-holes" means doing away with legal deductions that fleece the taxpayers and chase businesses out of the state. A few years ago right before I started college, I had a very short term job at a medium sized distribution center. When deciding which facility to close, the execs decided to close the one here because the printed material that went out with their promotional items are taxed in Ohio, but not in the other state. So they closed up shop and moved the equipment to the east coast.

Don't get me started on his lie about supporting concealed carry. It wasn't a flip-flop, it was a lie. He never had any intention of signing that bill into law. Taft is definately a first class turd.
