The new law will allow smokers to gather at any facility for up to five days a year "where the public is invited for the primary purpose of promoting and sampling tobacco products."

1/1/03 - 1/5/03 Newport Cigarette Fesival

1/6/03 - 1/10/03 Salem Cigarette Festival

1/11/03 - 1/15/03 Native American Tobacco Reverance Festival

On and on... You get the idea.

the primary purpose of promoting and sampling tobacco products

So, let me get this right. The people who are addicted to tobacco get thrown out the door of all bars in the city.

But, the city allows groups to gather for the primary purpose of *promoting* tobacco products?

If Bloomberg's goal is to stop people from smoking in the first place (as he says it is), isn't the latter much worse than the former?

I think the bar and bodega owners didn't slip Hizzoner enough "campaign contributions" before the last election.

This should be a sign to the pro-tobacco people here that they won't permanently get rid of your favorite weed. The government depends too heavily on taxes from it to make people totally stop it.
