I bought two ounces of Dutch tobacco, 200 filter-tipped cigarette tubes, and a German-made device that injects the tobacco into the tubes. It cost me $23.97 for everything, including tax. The fancy injector device was the most expensive item, at $15.95.

Does that mean she and others who make their
own cigarettes are now getting the last laugh?

''Not really,'' Kelley said. ''We're still dying.''

Easily the laugh line of the day.

Sam Moore in Helly with fag.

By Dave Weeden 2000–2

Edited excerpt from  lescroupiersrunningclub.org  if you want to read the entire article

I can think of runners who smoke. The guy who beat me in my first marathon had a cig in lieu of a warm down. He turned out to specialize in 24 hour races.

Sam Moore -- pictured before the start of the Barry 40 -- still clearly enjoys his fags. He also failed to come back to me before the finish line in the last Cardiff Marathon (1992). He was 20th. I was 21st and ever so pissed off.

Of course, there aren't many smokers over 40 years of age who have the physical energy or aren't "winded" easily to actually do gardening these days.

EXCUSE ME? I am over 40 and I see no ill effects to which you describe. And our summers are way to short up here to consider growing our own. Why go to that trouble when we can get the tobacco cheap?

The socialists are the ones who want to socialize the ultimate costs of a product onto others. Conservatives are big on personal (and corporate) responsibility.

The bags of tobacco we buy taste great!

It must not be too hard to even grow your own. If Al Gore could grow tobacco it couldn't be hard. If I smoked, I'd have some plants growing.

This article brings back memories. As a child I spent most of my summers on my uncle's farm in Newfoundland. He used to make his own cigarettes using one of those devices. Every night after dinner he'd spread brown paper over the kitchen table, then he'd take out his tin of tobacco, his cigarette tubes and his little tobacco injector. Then he'd spend about 30 minutes making his own cigarettes. Every move was precise. He never wasted one shred of tobacco. He even used a pair of tweezers to pluck out any excess tobacco that might be sticking out of the cigarettes. He'd make a pack, maybe two before the daylight failed. Then he'd sweep any leftover tobacco off the brown paper back into the tin and put everything away until the next night. I was fascinated by this ritual, and it wasn't until I was a little older that I understood why he did what he did. The reason, of course, was the outrageous price of cigarettes in Canada.

It's not that easy. You have to have a kiln. And if you grow anything in your house with "grow lights," you could be put under investigation for growing pot. I don't think I want to touch that. We are happy now with buying it at the local smoke shop.

have you suggested smokeless tobacco? skoal long cut straight for example?
worked for me.

Better for your lungs, but in some ways harder to quit than smokes. And definitely has some health related drawbacks of its own.

Ever looked at Swedish Snus? Very interesting.
