And GROUCHO could have had BOTH!

"A woman is only a woman, but a good cigar is a smoke" -- Groucho Marx

It is this: While the city plans to ban smoking entirely in "public" places, a bar, restaurant, pool or bingo hall or casino are not "public" places.

In a free society, such places are called private property.

If Groucho Marx ever said it, he was quoting Rudyard Kipling.

Hitler shot himself in despair at the age of 64.

Oh goody, I get to be the historian cop. Hitler (1889-1945) misplaced a large portion of his brains at the age of 56. Good old Stalin, who's favorite supper was roasted suckling pigs, swilled vodka like there was no tommorow, and was photographed quite often smoking his pipe, unfortunately lived to be be 73, popping off in 1953. You just can't tell about these things. :)

First, the quotation about a woman is only a woman is from Kipling, about 60 years before Groucho.

Second, yes, you can find smokers and drinkers who lived to a ripe old age, and health fanatics who died young, but it's worth remembering that Groucho and Churchill were prosperous enough to get the very best medical attention to prevent or cure some of their symptoms, the sort of attention that most of us couldn't afford.

Well, back in the days of Groucho and Churchill, no matter how much money they had, health care wasn't what it is today! Back in "their" days, the Doctors didn't really KNOW what was going on with people. No MRI's, no SONOGRAMS.

Good golly, I didn't WRITE this article! I just posted it! geeeeeesh

What you say is very true, but talking with my father a while back I found out something that was very strange. Do you realize back then that the doctors actually promoted smoking for clearing the Lungs & nasal cavaties of congestion. With medicine like that do you really think that they had that much of an advantage.

Actually, tobacco-related deaths occur at an average age of roughly 72, an age at which mortality is not unusual among smokers and non-smokers alike.

Well, Mr Hellraiser, smoking is no more dangerous then eating a Big Mac or french fries. Fat foods take a toll on the heart. I will take my chances with smoking!

Reminds me of the country song about the guy that loves fishing. His wife says she'll leave if he doesn't stop. He says he'll miss her.
