DAVIS SIGNALS PLAN TO SIGN SUV LEGISLATION
THE RUSH LIMBAUGH SHOW | M. Garrett

Posted on 07/08/2002 12:02:33 PM PDT by MattGarrett

Rush Limbaugh read a story today which states that Gray Davis plans to sign the SUV Tax Bill. AB 1493 (formerly known as AB 1058) will give California Air Resources Board the go ahead to work on ways to reduce "greenhouse gases." In one report CARB authored, they suggested the per mile tax, gas tax increase and SUV tax. Proponents of the bill are quick to argue that this bill does not raise taxes and CARB does not have the authority to enact any of their suggestions.

The bill will affix a tax of 2 cents for every mile driven in an SUV, MiniVan or truck, 50 extra cents per gallon of gasoline, and $3500 on all SUV, Minivan, or truck purchases.

Politicians pulled a dirty trick and changed the bill number, reinstating AB 1058 as AB 1493 late on a Friday night. They ran it through the legislature and passed it a Monday afternoon - with no comment from the public.

Stating that the bill creates the perfect balance between driver choice and responsible environmental policy, Davis indicated his intention to sign the bill.

Contact Gov. Davis at 1-800-988-2588 or email him at governor@governor.ca.gov to let him know this is bad tax policy plain and simple.

Why give him free advice? Call and tell him it's a good idea so he signs it. Then he'll lose the election.

And if you have a broken odometer...does that mean you have to stand in the corner...this whole bill is so ridiculous it doesn't deserve the post...I can't imagine any governor signing such a bill no matter his/her IQ...it would mean a guarantee of defeat in November...Simon must be producing the TV ads as we speak to beat Davis over the head with this law...

go to neighboring states to buy their SUV's (sans the extra $3500)..

California will then pass an entry fee for out of state SUVs that will be the same as or more than the $3500 they get for in-state cars. Then a year and a half later the federal courts will overturn the fee and California will have to give it back to everyone who paid it (happened in Florida a few years ago) but in the meantime, introduction of SUVs onto California roads will have been restricted while the unconstitutional rule has been in effect.

What the Hell for? It's a complete waste of time. He's not going to lose anyone's vote who's got the gumption to call.

Any Freeper that wants to help should call the Simon campaign and tell his staff to put out a press-release that says that overturning this bill will be the first act of the Simon governorship.

Mark my words: The bill will be signed into law, be upheld in the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals, and likewise legal sentiment will head eastward. They'll be passing the same laws on the East Coast and flyover country in a year or two. Count on that.

Sounds like it will put a lot of car dealers out of business when Californians go to neighboring states to buy their SUV's (sans the extra $3500)....

They will just collect the tax when you register the vehicle.

I understand why the law would have an evil aspect, but if it gets rid of most of the SUV's, then it can't be all that bad... At least CA roads are built to handle them. CT roads are not.

On the contrary, last time I drove in CT, the roads were so bad, I was glad I had an SUV. I don't think I'd want to risk the potholes on I 91 in a regular car; not at 65 mph anyway. Of course, what would happen at 65 mph is largely a theoretical point on Connecticut roads.

I see more Nazi pos's like you running lights, darting in front of trucks and other Bravo Sierra than I do people driving SUV's!

I don't run lights or dart in front of trucks. I've been given dirty looks because I refuse to drive at 60mph or faster in a 45mph zone. I always signal before changing lanes or making turns. I never back out of a driveway. I've never received a speeding ticket. I've been in one collision in the past four years, and that was because someone turned into the lane that I occupied without signaling or looking.

Only Nazis try to tell people what vehicles to buy and drive. You are no conservative.

I was making a lighthearted crack referencing the notion that SUV drivers tend to be a bit more reckless or have less regard for traffic laws than drivers of other vehicles (and where I live that is the case). I was not telling anyone what cars they should purchase or drive. That you claim such a statement from me indicates that you either have very poor reading comprehension skills or that you are an outright liar.

Vehicles have to be inspected as a condition of continued registration. Mileage will be recorded.

What i'm reading is a triple tax:

No# 1. The bill will affix a tax of 2 cents for every mile driven in an SUV, MiniVan or truck,...

Your End-Of-Year registration/inpsection scenario covers this one, but not the others. cost example: 12000 miles/yr * .02 = $240 per year

No# 2. 50 extra cents per gallon of gasoline,...

I'm scratching my head on this one? Is a gas pump attendant going to note your driving a SUV and tax accordingly? Aren't most gas stations self service? They'll need some convoluted plan to implement this tax, which should be easy to cheat.
cost example: (20 gal. tank * .50 cents) = $10 * 2X per month = $20 * 12 months = $240 per year

No.#3. $3500 on all SUV, Minivan, or truck purchases.

Car dealership adds this to the sticker price.

I think the leftist politicians of Kalifornia haven't thought things out, I'm sure they put the "cart before the horse." Typical leftist think. Idiots want to feel good.

The current system is fair.

You buy gasoline, in it are state and federal taxes. You pay the same amount per gallon as the guy driving a hybrid car, or a lawnmower.

This bill tries to punish SUV owners. Next, it will be commercial trucks, after that, luxury cars, then after that sports cars.

Remember what they did to the gun groups. First it was inexpensive 'saturday-night' specials (KKK hated the blacks who had them on the KKK's saturday-night raids), then it was the expensive black assault weapons, then the more expensive handguns, and now, the super-expensive 50caliber rifles!!!

ITS A SLIPPERY SLOPE! DON'T FALL FOR IT.

Do you have any empirical evidence to show that a propensity to obey or ignore traffic laws is related to the type of vehicle one drives?

No.

That's a relief. I have a Jeep and a Focus ZX3. The mood swings would kill me.

I am not a Coloradan, real or feigned, but I have relatives and friends in Denver and Colorado Springs. I abbreviated because I got tired of writing it out. In speaking I never call them "C'ians", but rather "Western Reds" or "San Fransocialists" but I felt I needn't obfuscate my point with other considerations.

Actually, what they will do is collect the tax when the car is sold. That way voters don't have to pay it every year, they will only get that little 'surprise' when they go to sell it.

Why would they risk the revenue? You might run the car till junked or your junker might get "stolen". You might "break" the odometer at that point etc. Whereas if they they make it part of the law that every car have a working odometer and check it at smog time they got ya.

Oh yeah. There is NO Law TOO STUPID for the California state government to enact.

Yes, they already do this under current law. Had a friend who bought an expensive car in Virginia just prior to moving out here. Wanted to save on the sales tax. Then he discovered when he registered it that CA collected some additional tax anyway. SOBs.

Because, you still have a bad law that is now in the books, and even if he loses, it is still the law.

One law that I can get behind is a 5 year sunset of every law on the books. The legislature will have to continually renew these stupid laws if they want them to continue, otherwise, they go away.

I see more morons driving recklessly and running lights in cars than SUVs, therefore your argument is nullified.

I understand your concerns, but I am not one of those people you described in your post. I AM a native Colorado resident. My grandfather was an early settler on the Western Slope. There's even a town near Grand Junction that bears my family name. Explain again, as a non-Colorado resident, how I would not be welcome.

I could say the same thing about a tax on pantywaist's cars. Then we could get the ponderous, uncoordinated and feeble people off the road.
