DAVIS SIGNALS PLAN TO SIGN SUV LEGISLATION
THE RUSH LIMBAUGH SHOW | M. Garrett

Posted on 07/08/2002 12:02:33 PM PDT by MattGarrett

Rush Limbaugh read a story today which states that Gray Davis plans to sign the SUV Tax Bill. AB 1493 (formerly known as AB 1058) will give California Air Resources Board the go ahead to work on ways to reduce "greenhouse gases." In one report CARB authored, they suggested the per mile tax, gas tax increase and SUV tax. Proponents of the bill are quick to argue that this bill does not raise taxes and CARB does not have the authority to enact any of their suggestions.

The bill will affix a tax of 2 cents for every mile driven in an SUV, MiniVan or truck, 50 extra cents per gallon of gasoline, and $3500 on all SUV, Minivan, or truck purchases.

Politicians pulled a dirty trick and changed the bill number, reinstating AB 1058 as AB 1493 late on a Friday night. They ran it through the legislature and passed it a Monday afternoon - with no comment from the public.

Stating that the bill creates the perfect balance between driver choice and responsible environmental policy, Davis indicated his intention to sign the bill.

No problem. Just turn away all SUVs at the CT state line, then hunt down and arrest the CT SUV owners and confiscate their vehicles. That should solve it, huh? No wonder you folks keep sending people like Dodd and Lie-berman to DC...

How are they going to tax mileage? Random odometer checks with bills handed out on the spot?

No, odometer checks during your yearly car inspection. But I was under the impression the 50-cent/gallon tax was pulled from the bill at the last moment because even the nutbag RATS in the Legislature knew that was going too far in terms of risking their political careers.

In any case, Rush is right. Davis is severely wounded now; Simon's kicking his butt in the polls. If Davis signs this bill into law, in the most car-obsessed state in the nation, it's over. Simon could go on national TV, announce he's having a sex change operation, is going to open a chain of abortion clinics, and that the spirit of Anton LeVey has taken over his body, and he'll still beat Davis by at least 10 points. And a lot of those RAT legislators, who put this bill together and rammed it through in (illegal?) secret meetings, are going to see themselves voted out as well.

My guess is that Davis will sign the bill only if he has already seen the handwriting on the wall regarding his re-election prospects. If Davis has given up hope that he will win re-election, he will sign the bill to buy money to re-elect other state Democrats. If Davis still has hope of winning, he will not sign.

I hate to pull a "Baldwin", but I have been thinking of moving to Colorado (where I grew up). If Davis is re-elected, my schedule might just have to be moved up.

Do you have any empirical evidence to show that a propensity to obey or ignore traffic laws is related to the type of vehicle one drives?

Tell you what...you stay in CT and let us deal with our problems...I venture to say that with the hundreds of thousands of drivers on CA freeways daily the statistics will show that we have the safest drivers and the fewest accidents per captia in the USA. And we sure don't need any suggestions from CT on what vehicles we should and should not be free to purchase and drive from you or Dimwit Davis.

No, he is purportedly signing the bill by gambling that he can get the environmental voters back without alienating the soccer moms, who are notoriously stupid.

I guess it would be relatively easy from a technical standpoint, but politically it would be like trying to force all the men in the state to date Maxine Waters.

The road is overrun with them, not to mention their brainless, dangerous drivers.

I don't see the relation there. There are bad drivers in all types of vehicles. I don't think they gravitate toward SUVs.

Sounds like the mileage tax will be collected when the vehicle is resold, like a sales tax.

If the bills stands that means on the road SUV's are going to be driven into the ground then scrapped.

I believe the bill strickly prohibits the above actions but is expected to result in "mileage quotas" for cars sold in CA.

Actually the milage tax can be collected very easily. When the car is inspected or registered they will grab the odometer reading. The next year they will then turn around and get it again, take the difference in the mileage and then bill the poor SUV driver the difference.

Watch them make it a criminal offense to tamper with the odometers. I think mine would just have to suffer a fatal malfunction if this passes.

Yea, this and the other bill to use bonds to pay the day to day expenses of the state, rather than cutting back like the rest of us.
