Ann Coulter: BUSH PAYS HOMAGE TO THE FETISHISTIC RITUALS OF LIBERALISM
Yahoo ^ | Wed Jun 19, 7:01 PM ET | Ann Coulter

Posted on 06/19/2002 4:45:25 PM PDT by Keyes For President

Interrupting the endless 30-year Watergate retrospective and getting back to the war for a moment, I've noticed that liberals are having trouble making any good arguments against Bush, so I thought I'd help them out this week.

In the third presidential debate, George Bush responded to a question about racial profiling by spontaneously denouncing the profiling of Arabs at airports: "Arab Americans are racially profiled ... people are stopped, and we've got to do something about that."

Admittedly, this was before Sept. 11. If Arabs were being stopped at airports before Sept. 11 -- and that's a big if -- that was probably wrong. There had been only one terrorist attack here in America by Arabs -- the bomb at the World Trade Center in 1993. (This is excluding Sirhan Sirhan, the first Muslim to bring the classic religion-of-peace protest to American shores, when, in support of the Palestinians, he assassinated Robert Kennedy.)

But now it's after Sept. 11, we're at war, and Bush is still vexed about profiling Arabs.

Last week, Bush's Department of Transportation required airport security to search former Vice President Al Gore ( news - web sites). There's a lot not to like about Al Gore, but he's not a terrorist. Gore said he was glad he was searched. Why? So that a potential terrorist could be spared the trouble?

Searching Al Gore is a purely religious act. It is the purposeless, fetishistic performance of rituals in accordance with the civic religion of liberalism.

It's not just Bush's Department of Transportation swearing fealty to the left's civic religion. A few weeks ago, FBI ( news - web sites) Director Robert Mueller told the Senate Judiciary Committee ( news - web sites) that "immediately after Sept. 11" when the FBI was trying to stop "a second wave of terrorists out there," FBI policy was this: "We were not looking for individuals of any particular religion or from any particular country."

Evidently, the only people the Bush administration thinks it appropriate to search are angry men with smoke pouring out of their trousers.

Fortunately, Fitzpatrick and O'Malley out on the street appear to have had a different idea about whom to roust after Sept. 11. If not, then valiant and hardworking FBI agents are to be commended for their rapid surveillance of 280 million Americans -- cheerleaders, dentists, nursing home residents, Amish, performance artists, professional baseball players and so on -- before settling on about a thousand Muslim men to detain.

If it weren't a laughable lie, Mueller should be fired for demanding that FBI agents chastely ignore religion and nationality when investigating terrorism.

But instead of calling for Mueller's head, Democrats on the committee demanded that Mueller issue yet more ritualistic professions of faith in liberalism's civic religion. Only a religious cult would require people to appear before committees and say things that are demonstrably false.

Mueller dutifully complied, repeatedly assuring the assembled clergy that "The bureau is against -- has been and will be against -- any form of profiling." He said the new guidelines do not address "members of a particular group and not members of a particular political persuasion or anything along those lines."

Galileo put up more of a fight.

In his inimitable Stalinist way, Sen. Russell Feingold demanded that no one at the FBI even consider whether racial profiling might have prevented 9/11. Liberals treat racial profiling like the Victorians treated sex. It is not a topic that may be discussed, except to recoil in horror at the practice.

Feingold said he was "very troubled" at seeing government officials "quoted in the press saying that they believe concerns of being accused of racial profiling led the FBI to not act on the Phoenix memo."

The Phoenix memo was the one noting that a lot of Middle Eastern men were enrolled in American flight schools. Inasmuch as all of the leaders of the terrorist attack were Arabs in American flight schools, it's not crazy to think that an aggressive investigation of Arabs in American flight schools might have thwarted the attack.

When Mueller came back with some flaccid response, saying he had heard an "indication" of "a possible concern" about racial profiling, Feingold imperiously informed the director: "I was hoping for a different answer." Not the truth -- just a different answer. The only thing he left out was "Comrade."

Muslim terrorists are trying to nuke Manhattan, and the Senate is conducting Soviet show trials on whether anyone at the FBI is wistfully daydreaming about racial profiling.

Relentlessly pursuing incipient thought crimes at the FBI, Feingold pronounced it "a distortion" to suggest that acting on the Phoenix memo would have constituted racial profiling. The memo, he said, "contained specific information about specific individuals."

The specific information was this: A lot of Middle Eastern men were attending American flight schools. Excising the portion of that statement that liberals refuse to consider -- Middle Eastern men -- the only "specific information" is: "People were attending flight schools."

These are the lunatics the Bush administration is hoping to propitiate by refusing to engage in racial profiling. If an attack comes, I assure you: No one will be praising Bush for abiding by the rules of the cult and carefully searching Al Gore.

Of course I would support it. I'm not petty, in case you hadn't noticed.Sorry, but I don't carry a "Not Invented Here " stamp on my forehead to just dismiss opinions from those I find disagreeable.

I also speak for myself, as well.

If you feel the President is "blowing it" then you ought to be celebrating as it will make way for your guy to win next time.

since the president is making the mistake of statist paternalism, I should celebrate the overall loss of liberty, since "my guy" will win?

what syncophant is in need of a leader? objective reality and the issue of mans' rights as being conditional to being as man is are not subject to debate.

there is no need to fawn at the altar of statist leadership. not to mention, the things which you did not address, ie if gore had given loan subsidies et al.

if you believe you have freedom then:

leave the country: you'll need a government approved passport
think you own your property? stop paying tax and you'll see who owns it.
think you work for yourself? each year, you work until the middle of may to pay your combined taxes.
do you want the best education for your children? if you do, you'll pay twice.

but, you are free, cause thats' what they say.

so, coke or pepsi.

Get over it - even the most ardent Bush supporter acknowledges that they don't agree with him 100% of the time on 100% of the issues. But I'm not sure anyone who doesn't want to hear that will, in fact, hear that....

Amen to that.

To these folks, agree with Bush on anything and you're a 'Bush-bot' or whatever silly schoolyard name they come up with this week. He's doing a good job but he's not a true conservative (never was) and he's not a dictator who will make all the fringe-right fantasies come true, either, so they attack and whine and moan endlessly.

President Bush is doing a good job in difficult times and adverse conditions. Perfect? Of course not, but far better than the fringe types will ever admit. Ignore these folks because they'll never 'get it' nor do they ever want to.

ALL should be inspected the same; thoroughly.

Given that the "inspections" for which some are singled out entail pulling people aside, taking off their shoes and belts and perhaps underwear, and completely emptying their luggage, the prospect of inspecting "ALL" airline passengers "the same" would bring air travel in this nation (and hence, the economy) to a virtual standstill.

Is that worth it? Just so we can all pat each other on the back for being so racially sensitive?

ALL should go thru screening.

ALL do (we ALL go through those metal detectors, remember? Not to mention those oh-so-useful questions at the desk like "do you intend to blow up this plane?" or whatever). What we are talking about is additional, intensive screening for things like explosive residue and perhaps hidden James Bond-y stuff. It's simply impractical to do this to ALL passengers. I guess what you are saying, then, is that it should be done to NONE. Even if it means a few planes are blown up. Wouldn't want to hurt the terrorists' feelings, after all.

Tim McVeigh ring a bell? What foreign country was he from

So because employing a profile would not catch a hypothetical Tim McVeigh-like airplane suicidal hijacker/bomber (something we haven't actually seen yet, keep in mind; neither McVeigh nor Kaczynski actually killed themselves for their "causes", like Islamofascists do), it should therefore not be done at all? Yeah, that's logical.

(Let's try it out-- If seatbelts don't prevent 100% of road deaths they should not be worn at all... )

do them right, and there's no need to profile.

This is false. You see, we have finite resources and a finite amount of time in which to check people thoroughly enough to stop anything other than an Uzi in the overcoat. How to use those finite resources? "Check everyone equally"? That means nothing more than what was done prior to 9/11 - the metal detector, the stupid questions. "Check everyone thoroughly - shoes off, belt off, everything?" That means: Country shuts down.

Can't we do something in between, by intelligently focusing our screening efforts onto those we think more likely to, well, actually be terrorists? If not, why not?

ALL should go thru screening.

What about 8 yr old Palistinian girls?? Need pics to show what they are capable of carrying?

Don't forget bizarre hispanic converts to islam. And of course, your old school American nutcases and deranged high school kids.

Obviously Arab men are the major terrorists of the moment, so it would be stupid to ignore them, but it would be stupid to ignore everyone else but them as well. I agree-everyone should be screened. If you want to travel, it's should become a permanent part of the process.

Gee, where are the hoards of mind-numbed "Bushies" calling legitimate criticism treason? They don't seem to exist, except in your imagination. One thing that sets most Bush supporters aside from the "Keysters" is they know they won't get perfection from any politician. From what I've seen they are more than willing to acknowledge legitimate criticism when warrented. That doesn't mean they want to throw the baby out with the bathwater.

It's beginning to look like a full court press, isn't it?

The Democrats don't need to even think about what do to to beat the GOP; our "own" people are doing their work for them.

And it is the hard profiling the President doesnt want. But, they don't see it. Fine, look for suspects that fit the bill; I am sure they are doing that; but not at the expense of "every dark haired, tan person is a terrorist" and blonde haired blue eyed children cannot be carrying something for their parent onto a plane.

Funny; on one hand Padilla is behind bars and his rights are "gone", yet they want to retain people of certain features to be held....

BWAHAHAHA

Frankly, you and Annie are not amongst those who I would call the 'crush-any-dissent-at-any-cost-and-by-any-means' crowd. I have heard both of you voice your opposition to some Administration policies.

The problems I usually have are with those who constantly scorch any of us who have legitimate concerns with personnel and policy. Such an approach (discouraging/squelching principled criticism), is counterproductive in the extreme...ultimately it just empowers the truly unruly and destructive.

I have complimented the Administration when I felt it was appropriate, and criticized when appropriate...such a stance obviously makes me a traitor in some eyes...but in fact the opposite is true. Those who remain silent when our own Party sells us down the river are the ones who are being destructive in the long haul.

God help us all if we are ever the mirror image of the Clintonista syncophants...the republic would suffer horribly if we were so unprincipled.

Regards,
EV

LOL, I love Anns work. I also like President Bush. What a quandry?

I agree with Ann that not to profile is idiotic.

I disagree with Ann in not searching Al Gore at every opportunity. I have it on good word that he is spreading chads throughout the land like a Fairy Godmother.

" but it would be stupid to ignore everyone else but them as well"

Yes it would. But who was suggesting that in the first place?

What is it with reading comprehension? Someone suggests racial profiling, and it never fails, certain other people always think we're somehow saying Let's IGNORE all non-Arabs at airports!

That's not what anyone is saying. "Ignore"? Please. No one is "ignored" and that's not even on the table.

Everyone stops at the desk, has to show a valid ID, and answer lamebrained questions.

Everyone puts their carry-on luggage into an X-ray machine and empties their pockets of keys and change.

Everyone has their possessions confiscated if they even resemble a weapon, to scale or not (Swiss army knife, nail clippers, Medal of Honor... )

And finally everyone walks through the metal detector. Everyone who sets it off is pulled aside for the wands, more pocket emptying, and perhaps much, much more.....

So again, why can't you comprehend what is being said? No one wants to "ignore" any air passengers. Just this: When it comes to extra screening efforts (extra! That is: in addition to what is already done to everyone), let's focus our (inherently FINITE) resources and time on likely terrorists, and not WASTE it by body-cavity-searching grandmas and little Trevor.

For some reason, whenever I say this someone writes back under the impression that I want to IGNORE Grandma and little Trevor, and apparently just wave them into the plane from the street curb. But why? Why is it so hard to understand what is actually being said by the profiling proponents?

Is it because it's simply easier to attack the pro-profiling position if you get to pretend that we're saying something we're not? Let me know,
