SACRAMENTO (AP) - Gov. Gray Davis has proposed a handful of new measures, including suspending an array of state tax credits, to help budget writers fill a $23.6 billion budget hole and boost reserves.
Davis budget adviser Betty Yee told a legislative committee Tuesday that he supports requiring employees to withhold taxes on stock options and bonuses from their paychecks, rather than paying a lump sum at the end of the year. That would help boost the state treasury throughout the year and speed up $400 million in revenues, Yee said.

Now, after two full weeks of meetings, the Conference Committee on the Budget must come up with about $5.4 billion, which includes deciding whether to accept roughly $3.5 billion in car and cigarette tax increases proposed by Davis last month.

As much as I want Simon to win, it does seem that Davis will so implode if he wins that the entire state will set hollywood afloat.
And take so much with them.

I'm a little confused here; work with me for a minute.
The budget deficit is $23.6 billion. How did that become only $5.4bln the legislature has to come up with? Where'd the other $18 billion come from?

36. Tactics. Overcoming others by letting them defeat themselves. Let your enemy expand and be puffed up, and his collapse will be imminent. In martial arts, use the aggressive imbalanced attacks of your enemies against themselves. Let them perish of their own extreme action, self-seeking, etc. Give your opponent room to fail. -- paraphrased from Lao-Tzu
Another variation: Don't interfere with your enemy while he is in the process of defeating himself. -- possibly attributed to Napoleon

You forget, my friend, next year we'll be rich again. By using every accounting gimmick, the bills still come due next year. As
bazaar as it sounds, are we, California, going broke? I'm just a simple pay-as-you-go guy. This thing is out of control. I believe,
with all of my heart, Gov. Davis doesn't have a clue. I read on another forum, most honorable men would opt for a self induced
trip to his maker.

The Governor can't claim in the fall he made the trains run on time this year.

I would bet that someone's or lots of someones pension funds got robbed, is counting on some magical revenue increase, or that he is counting on lawsuit money, or all of the above.
I wonder if Gray has noticed that his campain is on fire?

Yet another is: If your enemy's house is on fire, add gasoline and roast marsh-mellows in the flames.

Sounds like the state workers better have a comptroller check their pension and retirement trusts.
