SAN FRANCISCO -- First lady Laura Bush, comparing Republican gubernatorial nominee Bill Simon to her husband, on Wednesday told a crowd of Republican women that California should elect a business leader who cares about education.
At a lunchtime fund-raiser attended by about 1,000 enthusiastic supporters, Bush and Simon focused much of their remarks on education -- with Simon directly criticizing Democratic Gov. Gray Davis while Bush, taking the high road, avoided any mention of the current governor.

"The mismanagement of this state has sent us careening from crisis to crisis, and most recently, from scandal to scandal, to the point where sometimes I refer to Gov. Gray Davis as our first coin-operated governor," Simon said to applause at the event, from which aides expected to collect $500,000.
"He started it," Simon quipped, an apparent reference to the television ad Davis began airing this week that criticizes Simon's role at a savings and loan that was seized by federal regulators in 1993.DUMP DAVI$ & the Den of Socialists

I saw a short segment on the 10:00 news last night about Laura Bush in San Francisco. They made a big deal of differences between Bush and Simon, the suspension of federal oil leases for off-shore drilling. Bush admin wants it and Simon against it.
Saw this article In the land of Reagan, GOP faces prospect of a shutout , which frightened me. It possible predicts GOP will really be big losers in California. GO SIMON! prove them wrong!

A "Thank God for our First Lady" bump!

The fact that there were 1000 Republican women there at the fundraiser was a very good sign. The times are indeed changing. Simon is leading Davis in the polls despite the Davis smear campaign. I'm ever hopeful we can change the state around.

Don't let the DEmonRat Spin machine throw you ... That article is almost 2 months old and doesn't take into account any of the most recent developments. The liebral media is doing its darnedest to maintain status quo, will not cover Simon fairly even though ethics would require it to.
Before this election is held, a lot of blood will be spilled in both parties.
This state needs to free itself from the Socialist mob that continues to strangle it daily with all its lies and deceit and deception and outright omission of what has really happened; This state is held hostage by corrupt politicians in both parties.

Thanks for the encouragement. California is a big, beautiful state. It breaks my heart to see it wrecked.

NormsRevenge --- Thanks for posting this !
Any idea what the history is of the Simon comment on Davis as the coin operated Governor?
First place I saw it was in the FreeRepublic threads!
Anyone know?

The most important tool the California press had to use against Simon was that he was an extreme conservative, an outsider, an unknown lacking experience, who did not have Bush's confidence or the support of the California Republican leadership. They are still saying that the dark-horse Simon only beat Riordan because Gray Davis ran an ad campaign against Riordan--which is clearly not true and probably won't get them much mileage.
No, the important thing is that President Bush supports Simon and is happy to campaign for him. Sending Laura Bush is essentially the same thing. It's a very positive signal, and there's no way the press can distort that simple fact--that George Bush supports Bill Simon.

You are completely right. And, in some ways, sending Laura Bush to California shows more support than coming himself. Laura is his wife and partner in every sense of the words, and they obviously care about each other. I don't think he would ask her to do something she either didn't want to do or didn't feel comfortable with, or if he was only playing games out here in California. He wouldn't use his wife to play games.
At least, that's my impression.

The Mercury News ran this as a small item ...Have they no respect? This First Lady deserved better coverage. Simon will need a lot of support the next few months, having her back a few times will likely happen. I'd like to see GraYouT counter with Hilliary. ( Just Kidding! The further Hitlery stays away from Cali, the better .. Now Im not Kidding ;-))

Hillary already came here last month (or April) for Davis.
Simon is moving steadily along, and Davis is desperate, hence the awful, too early, and faulty ads.
