[history]
Gov. Gray Davis is spoiling for a fight over his plan to close a record $23.6 billion shortfall in the state budget, but his Republican rival, Bill Simon, isn't anxious to step into the ring.
Simon has been content to jeer at the Democrat's budget plan rather than challenge Davis with a detailed proposal of his own.

The beauty of this whole campaign is that the SF Chronicle loses no matter who wins. Should Simon win, then California is run by a Conservative. Should Davis win, then a Democrat gets blamed for the inevitable California collapse.

The media pressitutes are playing up Bill Simon's lack of specifics for its not an alternative budget plan they're interested in but in playing "gotcha!" Besides they're in love with tax increases and big government.
To: Southack
Far from it. They'll blame the ongoing deficits on Simon in the event he wins. Count on it.

When your opponent has one of his own trucks about to run over him, its a good idea to let it happen. Simons argument is perfect, "you, Grey Davis, got California into this mess, now,IN THE FULL LIGHT OF DAY,what are you going to do to get out". It`s going to be more taxes and thats when Grey will need to look for a job.

Yep when your opponent is busy destroying himself don't interfere. People will get the message without the color commentary.

"Show me a better budget that's responsible, and I'll sign it"Sorry Doofus, according to the California Constitution, Article IV, Section 12, it's YOUR job to come up with a balanced budget.
I guess the reporters in Kali find it unseemly to mention that fact.

Nice suggestions. Cut some spending, ease some regulations, sell some public land... pretty soon there's no more budget deficit.

Simon needs to start his campaign right now by saying " No New Taxes....EVER!" and that his budget will give back ALL the property tax monies that the demos and pete wilson stole from the local governments in the 90s. He should say that the gasoline tax will be LOWERED for businesses that purchase gas for their fleets and that the personal income tax will be made into a flat tax with only one exemption....a sales tax write-off or offset that will encourage local sales. And after he makes this announcement he should look into the camera squarely and say "folks, that's only the beginning!"

Remember the Democrats believe it is a living document. Changeable only by the people and -- since they represent the people the best -- only by them!
