How Does Your State Rank on Taxes?

Comparing the Total Tax Burden in Each State to Just the State/Local Tax Burden

Each state’s total tax burden represents a combination of federal, state, and local tax burdens. It can be instructive, however, to strip out federal taxes and compare just the tax burdens of states and localities.

The 33 links below display tables that compare total taxes as a percentage of income for each state to state/local taxes as a percentage of income, ranked in order, for the years 1971 to 2002.

The first column is more important than the second. CT is first in the second because we pay more federal taxes, because the average income is higher and thus there's some bracket creep going on. Moving isn't going to help you necessarily. But the first column shows which states tax the most.

Do a search for tn or tenn, they're trying to get state income tax passed. This will obviously affect their ranking!

Could be worse...you could be from here where we're #2 and all politics is run by left-wing liberal democrat unions and their governor.

Well, with our Red Chinese governor, a socialist democrat if there ever was one, who just introduced a new $20 billion transportation plan over the next 8 years, we are now #2. Next year I am sure we will vault to #1. Washington state sucks. I cannot wait till my wife retires from her job in 5 years and we can move to Wyoming. Home of VP Dick Cheney.

What are Washington's sales and property taxes? They must be out of sight because you don't have income tax (or do you)?

Wisconsin is one of the highest taxed, yet I'm at a loss as what to show for it. Well, they DO bus the inner city folk out of Milwaukee to jobs in outlying underpaying communnities. One would think with all this revenue that they wouldn't have to have closed down the waysides (with restrooms) along public highways. Nothing else says "Welcome To Wisconsin" like closed public waysides along the highways!

Just exactly WHERE does the Wisconsin tax money go? We're running at a mega deficit this year. Gee, what do ya think they're gonna do to take care of the deficit? Any guesses? Maybe we'll be #1 next year. Hey, Hillary, come here....want some money?
