Leading family advocate James Dobson has urged California parents to leave the state's government school system.
"In the state of California, if I had a child there, I wouldn't put the youngster in a public school," the president of Focus on the Family said in his daily radio broadcast Thursday.
"I think it's time to get our kids out," Dobson said. "And I'm going to get hit for (saying) that."
A lobby group called the Alliance for the Separation of School & State said Dobson's "comments on the state of public schooling may mark a key turning point in the critical education discussion."
Dobson has more than 5 million listeners in the U.S. and is heard in another 100 countries.
"For years, James Dobson has supported three options for Christians: public schools, Christian schools and home schooling," alliance president Marshall Fritz said in a statement. "With (Thursday's) courageous and insightful statement, Dr. Dobson joins the millions of Americans who have concluded that many public schools are no place to train new generations of Americans."
Fritz's group has an online "Public Proclamation for the Separation of School and State" that has garnered more than 15,000 signatures. The petition calls for the end of government involvement in education.
He notes endorsement of the concept by religious leaders such as D. James Kennedy of Coral Ridge Ministries in Florida; T.C. Pinckney, recently elected second vice president of the Southern Baptist Convention; Tim LaHaye, author of the popular "Left Behind" series of novels; and Rabbi Daniel Lapin of Toward Tradition.
In a speech at the National Religious Broadcasters convention in February, Dobson noted that the California legislature has mandated the teaching of "homosexual propaganda" in the state's public schools.
"They're teaching them that bisexuality is normal and that homosexuality and heterosexuality are morally equivalent," Dobson said.
On its website, however, Focus on the Family maintains there is still hope for public schools in general.
An article titled "Rebuilding Hope for Public Schools" states: "Schools still face formidable foes: postmodern secular teaching and liberal agendas, policies that need to change, overly large classes, problems with discipline and the need for higher academic standards. But if ... we mix prayer with works, if parents are actively and prayerfully involved in their children's education, the evidence shows that public schools can change."
You got that right. They want classroom volunteers to staple, glue, file, and shut up. I been there and done it, and now we're homeschooling and never going back.
By the way, Dr. Laura is also now urging her listeners to GET OUT of the government schools, mainly for the pro-gay, pro-sex, and anti-family garbage being served up to the students.
Your going to be thinking for a VERY long time for this one! I am not going help you cause I can't thunk of anything anyhow! hehehe
And that's why he should be ashamed of himself. He's been a shill for whatever the government wants to do to our children all that time if he has been "always, always aware". I don't doubt that he has been aware, and that makes him complicit.
My family never paid heed to radio/TV "christian leaders". It turns out that my parents were right about such people. Media "christian leaders" are making a good living undermining the teachings of Christ.
I was trying to defend Dobson, of whom I admire & respect.
You two don't, and nothing I can say will change your minds.
Burke, I know how the public schools operate, but thanks for the info lesson ....
I can only testify that Dobson, years ago, helped me understand that parents can & should make a difference in our schools, and set me on that course for many years.
And not only that, but after 15 years of marriage & when a lot of doubt & insecurity was settling in......I heard on his radio program & from reading his books.... life experiences and faith works of others that literally pulled me through that uneasy time.
I will always thank him & be grateful for his tireless devotion to families.
And yes, he does have a wonderful facility in Colorado Springs, and when I finally got to visit, I couldn't stop weeping for the joy he had brought to my entire family, and others like myself.
That's all I have to say.
God bless.
.....However, in the public school that she & my son attended & graduated from, there has been & still is a Christian club which meets ON CAMPUS for the past 9 years.......with pastors, Bibles, praise choruses, etc......and reaching the unchurched public school children in this highschool.
Also, in case you are unaware, there have been & still are THOUSANDS of Mom Groups who meet on a weekly basis to PRAY for our public schools, and interract with the administration as parents who care, and volunteer & bring 'light' to the campus.
All across America & overseas, there are Moms meeting in homes weekly.....praying for our schools.
Where did I first hear about this?.......Dobson's radio program.
I became a Prayer Facilitator for the schools in our county, and we had Moms representing over 25 schools engaged in weekly prayer, and also acts of service & kindness.
So, if Dobson is now saying, 'Get out of the California schools'........you can believe MANY will heed his call, and understand this state has been forsaken.
But I hope you know there are untold Christians in California who are heartbroken that it has come to this...........but understand the agenda that Planned Parenthood, the Gay Alliance, etc. has finally gripped the schools there so tightly, Dobson has had to make this plea.
And he will be listened to.
P.S., I'm aware that not all publik skools are this bad, but will they stay that way, and for how long?
