SACRAMENTO -- With the state's budget shortfall growing, groups whose programs are likely to face a new round of cuts this spring have launched an effort to get lawmakers to consider politically risky tax increases.
The push is bringing together public employee unions, which have an obvious interest in avoiding drastic cuts, as well as groups that don't normally get involved in tax issues, from churches to advocates for the elderly.

Reagan tried that with the promise that for every dollar raised Congress would cut $8.
The result?
For every dollar raised, Congress cut $0.34.
Kalifornia is unsalvagable. Leave while you still can.
Mexico will take it back anyways.

Did someone snitch on you? The Highway Patrol checked out my RV park several times a week (unknown to me until I got caught) for out of state workers and vehicles. The next year, I parked on a friends farm and no problem (not even when I dug my own septic system).
What really annoyed me is they sent a letter to the RV park. They could have talked to me or put the notice on my trailer. I didn't get mail at the camp and could very well have pulled out and ended up with a warrant on me I wouldn't know about until pulled over years later.

I wrote a proposal for privatization of several city services in my state and was astounded by the negative response I got from the voters (I was running for office at the time). They just could not allow "their" City workers to be replaced by low-cost, no bennies workers. Unbelievable! The City would save millions just by bidding out some services. The same goes for States and the Feds too.
California is a welfare state and State agencies hire thousands of lazies for high salaries and they all vote for dumocRATS. That is not going to change for the better.
I willingly left CA and my taxes, insurance, car registration, business fees, sundry licenses, food and gasoline costs went down by half. The last days oif the late great state of California are soon here, so I will say goodbye now in case I don't hear the giant sucking sound.

When I was LEAVING California I registered my cars in Wisconsin for three months as my registration was due. I saved $800 dollars that way.

Unfortunately, there are 4 Repubs in the Calif Assembly and 1 Senator who showed last summer they're ok with tax increases - they supplied the necessary votes for a Davis budget that raised taxes, Anthony Pescetti is one of the tax-hiking GOP Assembly members - and he's there until next Jan. Sen Dickerson is still there too. So don't assume the GOP won't help make it a 2/3 vote for more tax hikes,

I like Gray Davis. He has shown the world how a Democrat can single-hadedly destroy one of the largest economies on Earth. He has performed a good job based upon his readings of Karl Marx.

I renewed my CA registration for the last time in July 2001. The license plate with the valid sticker is still in my trunk. I renewed because my insurance was paid until Sept 2001. In Sept 2001, I re-titled and registered the car in Idaho. My trips in 2002 are all on the company nickel. I stay in a hotel at company expense and return home on a regular basis to perform work on other contracts so that my "tax home" remains in Idaho for IRS purposes. That 910 mile drive is hard on the car (and me), but it serves a purpose. BTW, when I renewed the registration in July 2001, I purposely showed the home address in Idaho. The CA DMV clerk said quite a few out of state workers whose cars remain primarily in CA have similar registrations with out of state addresses. Frankly, I've been trying to wrap up this trip since July 2001, but it just keeps going and going.

Good for you! At this rate, the last producing citizen in CA won't even have to turn out the lights when he leaves. They'll already be out.

What I find interesting is that last fall when the CA Bond rating was lowered the investment rating agency said that the State had little choices to balance its budget except to raise taxes, which would be difficult in an election year, but for which there would be little choice.
The Washington state legislature is slapping themselves on the back for patching together a budget that does not have major tax increases. The democrats remember how in 1993 they raised taxes and were swept out of control of both the state house and senate. They don't want that to occur again.
I see little choice in California, but I also see Democrats being much smarter than they use to be. It should make for an interesting election year.

sure hope the Simon camp is practicing some "strategery" over this issue. Now is the time to be putting on the ads that say "Davis WILL raise your Taxes!"
Simon has already begun "strategerizing." He's helping bankroll a ballot initiative that calls for a $500 tax credit for property owners and renters. As for the legislature raising taxes, no count on it. The Dems are going to let the unions do the dirty work by placing an initiative on the ballot in November to raise the sales tax by 1 cent.
