Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.
President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said. That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service. It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty. "The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico." The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I. The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members. Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal. The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.

Hey, if VA Alvogado is going to insult me by saying I'm "ironing my sheet", then don't expect me to be Mr. nice guy either. You don't win arguments by throwing the race card out there against anyone who doesn't like what's going on regarding illegal immigration.
I know what you mean but we really should just ignore these people. It is obvious by now that they don't have anything to back up their position and that they are unable or unwilling to engage in a real debate. Once he played the race card, that should have been the end of the "discussion".
Also I am beginning to think that VA Alvogado and Dane are either the same person, or are working as a team. Notice, for instance, that they both tend to throw around similar accusations: anyone who does not agree with them is under the influence of drugs, for instance. Or a racist. So either they are the same person, or stamped from the same brain-dead mold.
Oh, but you want your cheap vegetables. You want the taxpayers to subsidize your gardeners, dishwashers, and food growers. I'll bet you want tax supported housing for them too so that you don't have to pay a sufficient wage for them to afford the rent. Of course, if you WERE paying those wages then perhaps Americans would be doing those jobs or we could justify automating our way out of needing them.

I supported GW to the hilt, during the "month from hell", in Nov 2000.
That included attending several Bush rallies in Sacramento.
If, if and more IF he supports any form of amnesty for illegal aliens, I will never vote for him again, let alone actively support him.
Never forget that all the little "deals with the devil" that conservatives have struck over the last several decades have gotten us to where we are today.
I hate to tell you a little secret - a lot of those able bodied workers are raking in the dollars from America, taking jobs away from Americans so that they can retire in their home land and live like kings. I am against all immigration. A lot of people on this post seem to think the only problem with immigration is the "illegal" immigration - I disagree 100%. Immigration (legal or illegal) is no longer in the best interest of America.
Me too...Nov 2000 I joined the KSTP radio protest on the capitol steps of St. Paul, Minnesota---that was the first time I had EVER "protested", too.
Believe me, had I known Bush had this in mind at that time, I would have stayed home and done something more important, like scraping the plaque off of my dog's teeth.
My family is a bunch of Democrats so they are gloating with glee at my displeasure for Bush, but at the same time they are against "guest worker" (read: Amnesty-Step 1) as well.
It's too late---he has lost my vote for 2004. I'll vote for his opposition in the primaries and, if he wins, I'll vote for a 3rd party candidate in the general election. Hopefully, we'll have a third party a la Australia's One Nation that will step up to the plate.

As long as Nations keep Sovereignty to any significant level, the Globalism won't work. The attack right now is from an overwhelming number of fronts --- The International Criminal Court, BioSpheres, WorldWide "PeaceKeeping Missions", ALL of the U.N. Programs, and more too numerous to list.
There is ABSOLUTELY no consideration being given, any longer, to the will of the Citizens of ANY Nation. A Prime Example is this rush to Amnesty, and Open Borders. The Zones of Control must be implemented for the next step to occur.
It's stated that Bush wants to "take this to Mexico and Fox" on his visit. Are any of us being asked if we agree to it? No. Are the "Representatives" following our wishes/demands? No.

I've often wondered if that was the real reason or not. The total costs outweigh the "savings" of new workers, and these tend to be new workers at the very lowest end of the pay scale, contributing the least to social security.
To really make up the difference, we would have to double or triple our population. Do we really think we can absorb another two or three hundred million people? If anyone wanted proof that SS was a pyramid scheme, here it is.
Of course, if we had not aborted/birth controlled away all those millions of babies over that past 30-40 years, we would not have such a huge problem with SS.
