Tancredo doubts he can block amnesty-extension bill
Denver Post ^ | March 8, 2002 | Bill McAllister

Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.

President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said.

That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty.

"The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico."

The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I.

The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members.

Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal.

The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.

As we reach into the 300's on here, I wanted to remind everyone to read your #177 - says it all.

And from another poster:

I know, first-hand, the heartache caused by illegal immigration. My beautiful daughter ~ young, bright, talented, and college-bound ~ became involved with a young Mexican opportunist, with 14 siblings and many, many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins, who are all illegal aliens and are all unskilled, uneducated, illiterate, non-English-speaking, and nearly uneducable. They laughed at the fact that still more of their family members "made it" across the border after the WTC tragedy. They have no values, morals, ethics, or standard of living ~ and instead they know how to steal SSN's, how to obtain false documents, how to evade the law, and when and where to change their names. My daughter lives in poverty, her future in the balance, our family torn apart, and my heart cries to think that this large group of people, numbering in the HUNDREDS from one family (not to mention friends back in Mexico whom they constantly encourage to "come on over"), could be granted amnesty ~ and just what would that change? None will ever make the slightest contribution to our society, none will become trained or skilled, and none will hold a loyalty to a country which is not their own. What could be more pathetic? I AM NOT ALONE. I found that there are COUNTLESS everyday Americans who have had the same or similar experiences ~ with their own painful stories ~ all because of ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION. THIS is domestic terror at its worst. PLEASE STOP THE MADNESS!

This is being lived out all over the US. I know a family in Manassas, VA, who have had the same travesty visited on their family. Another who lives in Dale City, VA - Ditto. A friend I've met on FR tells me of the same kind of stories in Ohio. It goes all over America - the illegal Mexicans aren't just in the Southwest anymore. Shoot, I even saw a low-slug older-model US-made car with MEXICO tags on it in a grocery-store shopping lot last week. I could only guess that they drove straight here - probably to join members of their family who crossed illegally, and who perhaps managed to get however many could fit in that thing, across the border, 'somewhat legally'???

I am so disgusted with Bush's pushing this. Am I the only one who remembers the State Dinner given to honor Presidente Fox on Sept. 8th - at the White House, and how he was quoted in the newspapers, demanding that Dubya have an amnesty and guest worker program in place by the end of the year. The NERVE! He's DEMANDING that our President meet HIS demand?

Then, Sept. 11th happened, and I thought (stupidly) this issue was dead forever. Not so.

Having read Nea Wood's earlier comments, I think she has it right. Bush may know that he's condemning himself to one term over this issue alone, but that won't stop him from pushing this through.

Please, everyone - make telephone calls and send FAXes on Monday and Tuesday. Emails just don't "count" as much, for whatever reason. So, call your Representative, call the White House. Use FAIR and NumbersUSA to send FAXes - as many as they will let you send. We have to be proactive on this, or we are going to all have to learn Spanish, just to buy a burger (already true here in No. VA!!!) Having read the article on the increase of Epilepsy due to uncleanliness associated with Hispanics, I've now sworn off McD's/Wendy's/Burger King. I digress.

CALL. SEND FAXES. Be proactive or we will get this rammed down our throats.

Let's just become part of Mexico and let Vicente Fox henceforth be our President. Problem solved.

I wish tomorrow was election day so I could go to the polls and write in BILL CLINTON.

LOL. I think I'll write in Castro (if he's still alive),like Bush, he doesn't listen to his people either. Seriously, I will not stay home, I will go vote, but I will write in Alec Baldwin before I'll vote for GW again.

Wow and just think 100 years ago people in the US were saying the same thing about the Irish as you say about the Mexicans in reply #341

Hyperbole has always been the hallmark of the anti-immigrant crowd. And your hyperbole is just that and the same hyperbole used against the Irish 100 years ago.

Here are the media contact numbers to inform the public of the inpending 245(i)that congress is going to shove down our throats.

Media Contact Numbers

Personally, I find that the Shawn Hannity Radio Show is easy to get through to and C-Span as well. I expect many here to be clogging the phone lines on Monday. One of us should be able to get on the air. Keep trying and hit that redial button on your phone

I finally found one that I was looking for. This is from the LA Times. Click the link for the complete article.

Mexican ID Card Gains Status, and Long Lines of Applicants

And dozens of financial institutions courting Mexican customers--the Bank of America and Wells Fargo Bank, among them--are accepting the cards as legal identification for opening bank accounts.

After Sept. 11, when proving one's identity became vital in a security-conscious society, the matricula has become an alternative for millions of undocumented workers not eligible for a green card or Social Security card, who therefore could not get even a driver's license or state-issued ID card.

Not all states are accepting the MC's yet but it is just a matter of time. Check with the bank in your area that you do business with.

I hope this is some help to you.

I agree. If it looks like a liberal, sounds like a liberal and acts like a liberal...it must be a liberal.

So what the hell is wrong with that? Wow people putting their hard earned money in the bank, that banks can loan out to businesses or for mortgages.

Oh the horrors.

Maybe we should start putting out some information within the criminal illegal alien crowd that Texas has real cheap, housing, unlimited handouts, easy access to Mexico,

NO! We have enough!

open spaces near Crawford Texas, and they absolutely welcomes illegal aliens with open arms.

LOL, I do like that idea. I'd love to see Mexican squatters set up camp on his Crawford ranch like the thugs on Zimbabwe farms. But really, we have more than enough. Let's direct them to someplace like Indiana.

What is liberal about trying to promote economic growth south of the border?

Sheesh you all are really frothing at the mouths aren't you.

Can American citizens put their money in a bank without disclosing their Social Security numbers? Why do you support special treatment for illegal aliens, Dane?

Why do you say european culture better than latin culture?

This wasn't directed at me, but I'll go ahead and answer it: because European culture IS better than Latin culture. You won't find PC cowards here, go back to DU, you'll feel more at home. And while you're at it, pick up Pat Buchanan's book, "Death of the West".

LOL! Talk about spin reply #341 is ethnic baiting at it's worst and it looks like you condone it.

You probably would have said the same thing about the Irish 100 years ago as was that being said about Mexicans in reply #341.

Which was said and you don't deny that fact, btw.

Sometimes I wonder what would happen if, in 2004, a Democrat like FDR came along and promised to stop the invasion.

Hell, I'd vote for Barbra Streisand if she said she would stop the invasion.

Why are you against people without a social security number putting their money in American banks, that help Americans?

Give them a social security number anyway(you are against that) and see if they like the ponzi scheme.
