Tancredo doubts he can block amnesty-extension bill
Denver Post ^ | March 8, 2002 | Bill McAllister

Friday, March 08, 2002 - WASHINGTON - Rep. Tom Tancredo takes credit for thwarting the Bush administration's last effort to offer partial amnesty to thousands of illegal residents, but Thursday the outspoken immigration foe said he may have been outmaneuvered by the White House.

President Bush has struck a deal with the House leadership to place legislation that offers an extension of amnesty on its consent calendar before Bush heads to Mexico for a state visit next week, the Colorado Republican said.

That action should ensure quick House passage of legislation that Bush has repeatedly sought from Congress. It would allow an undocumented person to receive legal standing, such as a valid green card, by filing a declaration with the Immigration and Naturalization Service.

It presumably also would require the person to have been in the United States by a certain date and have filed a declaration with the INS from an appropriate sponsor, such as a relative or employer, and pay a $1,000 penalty.

"The terms are still up in the air," said Dan Stein, executive director of the Federation for American Immigration, a group that has been allied with Tancredo. "We've heard to the effect that the president wants something to bring down to Mexico."

The initial Bush proposal, designed exclusively for Mexicans, once was high on the president's legislative wish list, but it was delayed after the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11. However, as the president noted Wednesday in a speech to the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce, he now is pushing for the extension of the amnesty program known by the section of immigration law that covers it, Section 245I.

The president hailed it as a way to reunite family, separated by the border. "If you believe in family values, if you understand the worth of family and the importance of family, let's get 245I out of the United States Congress and give me a chance to sign it," Bush told the chamber members.

Tancredo, the head of a congressional caucus on immigration issues and proponent of halting virtually all immigration, said he had blocked a previous attempt by Bush to push an extension of the amnesty program through the House. But this time, he said House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert, R-Ill., had agreed to place the issue on the suspension, or consent, calendar, making it difficult to defeat the proposal.

The Senate might be more favorable to the bill than the House, expanding the numbers of individuals who can apply, Tancredo said.

Cannon is pathetic. He should just join the demo party and be done with it.

Bush should join him.

What is the favor he is getting for selling out? Our good friend Mexico voted with the Oil Cartel and jacked up the price of oil for all of us.

I got the feeling from talking to this aide that Gekas sees Amnesty as enticing Fox to increase Mexico's oil production instead of informally following the Cartel's production limits. In other words "cheaper oil" from Mexico. Yeah, these guys come pretty cheap don't they?

Your much nicer than I am, I would have said that anyone that made such a deaf, dumb, and blind statement to me has no business taking care of my business in Washington.

No sleeper terrorists has to worry anymore about being here on an expired visa, they can just lay out a thousand dollars of Al Queada funds, collected through charities fronts here in the Divided States of America, whose leaders our President was so anxious to be seen with on national tv sucking up to, and he's home free. He doesn't have a thing to worry about, remember that the next time a building goes down, or a city goes up in a mushroom cloud. If and when that happens and these scum meet on the Capital steps to sing God Bless America again, they may find people are not listening to them.

"Such is not a mandate to diss the Republican Base, as Mr. Bush is doing right now...."

How ironic that in two pieces of mail I received yesterday seeking contributions to the Republican party, they state how the GOP will "protect our borders."

We can't be intimidated by the liberal media by being afraid of being called nazis or racists anymore. After all, with CNN and the other alphabet-channels experiencing decling ratings and with all of the daily liberal newspapers closing down and folding like cheap suits, they are being rendered impotent!

I hope we don't neglect calling Tancredo's office and thank him for his efforts, encourage him to run for President, and laud his efforts on our behalf.

Good idea. I called earlier and told him to keep fighting the good fight for the rule of law. I also told his staff that even though I don't live in his district, I will be sending him a contribution come election time.

Look at this on C-Span, a rerun from earlier today of a report on the war. What is the deal here?

If I am going to have a liberal Republican in Washington..I may as well have a REAL liberal and vote Democrat!

At least if we elect Democrats, we can blaim all our problems on them, and they will have to assume responsibility for the evil that will befall our country. Right now they can claim it was "bipartisan."

I think Cannon's running the game for Bush in return for steel price protection so that Geneva can come back out of bankruptcy. In other words, all of them are selling us down the river for their own gain. Shocking.

Regulator, I think you are on to something here. What a coincidence! The House's biggest backer of Amnesty for criminal illegal aliens just happens to be financially tied to a bankrupt steel company and Bush just a week ago slapped tariffs on imported steel. Bush is looking more and more like Slick Willie every day.

I'm SORRY!!! I forgot to add you to my pingy thingy. My only excuse is that I'm running back n forth to the kitchen stove. Look into my eyes and see the regret, @@ (see?)

Anyway, it's obvious they have no intention of televising this disgrace. C-Span is showing reruns.

Case law is not a cite from the Constitution.

What's the matter with you girl? You're blowing off the third branch of government. Another branch provided by the CONSTITUTION. I happen to respect ALL parts of the constitution. You should too comrade.

For some reason the moderator deleted my post on 1765. All I said was that feminism has resulted in a rift between men and women that has resulted in fewer marriages and, hence, fewer children being born. Furthermore, I'll go one step further in saying that feminism has bore itself in the legal profession, and the result is that many men now do not desire to get married out of fear. This is so blatantly obvious, but for some reason, it gets banned, even here on FreeRepublic.

The second thing I stated was that it seems as though more white children are being born, especially among the 25-30 crowd. It's just an observation in my own town. I said that I can notice a visible contrasts between five years ago and now. Now, with all children being precious, even white ones, what is wrong with saying this?

Apparently, white people are now unable to talk about themselves, even on a forum that lauds itself as the defender of free speech. Even so if you are talking about facts and general trends. Orwell revisited.
