Unlike liberals, we conservatives have pride in who we are and what we believe in. We won't vote for someone who repeatedly and deeply offends us. But we are not, as some pundits have suggested, committing political suicide. On the contrary, we are fighting for our survival.
Alatore was one of the most powerfull members of the Assembly at the time and was in charge of redistricting in 1981 and saw fit to take a 6 block long 1 block wide strip which included my office and place it into the adjoining district. No one had ever come even close to getting that many votes against him.
We don't need to win the welfare districts that have no opportunity of ever even getting close to being 39% which we always considered winnable with a good campaign. They are losers and should be written off as such. The only reason for running was to entrap his campaing funds in the district and making him spend them to keep his seat.
In previous campaigns he didn't have to spend a lot of money to keep his seat but I put up a crediable challange and he had to outspend me 3 to 1 to assure his win.
I consider the time and money spent in the campaign to have been well spent.
Are you f*cking stupid?
Latino voters are citizens. Prop 187 was in regards to ILLEGAL ALIENS, not latino voters.
Bush knows Riordan can beat the unpopular Davis who is uncontested on the Democratic side.
No, Riordan can't beat Gray Davis. Not without the GOP base, who will sit the November election out if no viable conservative candidate exists.
By the way, President Bush will support whichever GOP hopeful wins today.
Riordan isn't conservative enough for the Republicans. And Republicans are buying this?
Yes, because it's absolutely true. Why would Republicans support a Democrat who claims to be a Republican?
The sad thing is that California's fringe-right Republicans are more than happy to lose again. They love losing. They haven't won anything important in years.
We like to further our party's supposed conservatism, not elect fake Republicans in order to have a fake victory.
Here he is, Richard Riordan, a Republican who can not only win in California, but who shows just what kind of Republican will win in the years to come.
If that's true, then the GOP will be a minority party very soon. A party without principle is not worth supporting.
In the post-Sept. 11 era, more and more Democrats like me will be looking for smart, moderate Republicans.
Why don't you force your own party to become less socialist and more centrist then? Why do you want to destroy my party?
Nothing against GOP candidates Bill Simon and Bill Jones two smart guys who will never be elected as governor but a primary victory by either of these guys will only ensure that Gray Davis gets another four years to muck up the state where I live.
Why don't you vote against him in the DEMOCRATIC primary then? There is another Dem candidate by the way. Oh yeah, he's pro-2nd Amendment rights.
I'm a lifelong Democrat. But I just happen to be a Registered Republican this time around, and I'll be voting for Riordan.
Thanks a lot. A fake Republican voting for the fake Republican candidate. You Democrats certainly are pains in the ass. You are a fool.
I define victory as winning. Conservatives don't gain anything by electing Riordan.
and where might you be from?
Like mimicking everything the Democrats do? Why don't you go join the Democratic party if you don't like the principles of the GOP. The real GOP, not the California Democrat-suckup GOP.
Why are you willing to give up your conservatism simply to "win"?
If Riordan wins the primary, I will he happy to see Davis re-elected. Hell, at least Gray Davis supports the death penalty, unlike DICK Riordan.
Yeah, and afterwards, the REPUBLICAN PARTY takes the blame, instead of the properly-labled Democrats like Davis.
YES!!!!!!!!!! Do some homework before you lecture us about "winning".
And a majority of Latino voters DID vote yes on 187.
It's nice to see people from outside California telling us about ourselves, and our voting habits. The last conservative to run for office was Hershensohn, and he's been the closest to winning in any election in 10 years.
Yes. 75% of ALL Californians voted yes on the measure -- obviously including Democrats.
The problem is not that Riordan is a "moderate," but that he is a LIBERAL a la Rockefeller. I don't think Simon can win against Davis, but Riordan would not be much of an improvement.
I'm sure you have other things to do, but I'd love to hear more. Tell me about strategy. Where did you go? What did you say to the locals to gain their support? What was your mail like? Grassroots strategy/phone banking/block walking?
Thanks.
