A single US nuclear-powered carrier group - which forms around the USS Enterprise, for example, with a flight deck almost a mile in length and a superstructure 20 storeys high - concentrates more military power in one naval group than most states can manage with all their armed forces. America has seven of these battle groups.

A mile-long aircraft carrier! Cool! Let's buy two!

Lie back and think of England, you wussy Euro-turds... the Great Satan is on the move. Enough appeasement, enough "sophisticated diplomacy"--we've tried all that, and we got bitten in return.

To quote my favorite movie line (from Tombstone): "You've called down the storm--now prepare for the thunder." Or something like that.

'The war on terrorism,' says Professor Paul Rogers, of Bradford University's Department of Peace Studies, 'is simply a euphemism for extending US control in the world, whether it is by projecting force through its carriers or building new military bases in central Asia.'
Sour grapes prof! Makes you realize what a weenie you are doesn't it.

There's us who don't put up with terrorists, then there's you who offers up his sister to them. It's time for you to move on over now.

Here's what they MEANT to say:

Wahhh! We can't afford the neat new toys you Americans have!

It's not FAIR! Our museums need funding, and we need more diversity training,
so we can't AFFORD a big military!

We'll let you Americans rescue us from totalitarianism, then we'll go back to
bashing you 'cause YOU'VE GOT MORE THAN US! Boo hoo!

What the freak is a "Department of Peace Studies"?

I'm thinking here, "Peace, peace, but there is no peace. . . ."

As for this Beijing parrot shrieking hegemonism ("extending US control in the world")--shades of "imperialist warmonger".

Why couldn't Paul Rogers have been in the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001?

Paul, stay back: my dog will bite.

We're mad as hell and we're not going to take it anymore!

And if they so much as blink, we're going to blow them to Mars.

And this time, we won't make the same mistake the Romans did.

I remember the time when I was serving on the Enterprise and I decided to take a jog around the flight deck for exercise. A quarter mile long meant a half mile round trip. One lap around and I was out of breath. Man was I out of shape. I really felt bad. NOW I find out that that damn ship was a MILE long. I had actually ran TWO MILES!!! Now I don't feel so bad.

Re #1

These people call themselves experts. But they missed one important piece of puzzle about why so much increase in defense budget is planed. U.S. military is moving into space big time. Not just spy and communication satellites but satellite which takes off from runway and go up to orbit and reenter into atmosphere and land on the runway again. And orbital directed energy weapon stations. Orbital bombers. So it is wrong to say that what U.S. does is like ordering more cavalries before WWI. U.S. is ordering B-29 and P-51 before WWI. I am shocked that they completely missed it.

This article is coming from the country which could barely muster forces capable of beating Argentina. The strongest possible reason for having an American size military is that we are stuck with allies like the British that have chosen to disarm.

He's looking at it all wrong. It's not that we're so powerful (well maybe we are) it's that they're such wusses.

"The reality - even before the latest proposed increases in military spending - is that America could beat the rest of the world at war with one hand tied behind its back. The requirement that US armed forces be able to fight two fully fledged wars with two separate adversaries simultaneously may recently have been dropped, but only because it would be hard pushed to find two such equal foes to fight."

Imagine that Iraq, North Korea, and Communist China all watch CNN. Imagine also that our "one war" military becomes bogged down in Afghanistan and/or Bosnia and/or somewhere else.

"Hmm. Kuwait looks especially tasty," thinks Hussein.

"Hmm. Taiwan looks very attractive," say the Chicoms.

"Wow. South Korea looks really ripe," say the N. Koreans.

No conspiracy is necessary. All they gotta do is watch the news.

So...what if all of those 'hot spots' decided to go off all at once?

The testosterone of the entire continent combined wouldn't make even a teeny-tiny pair!
