Police: Sibling Couple Kept Dead Son In Casket
Brother Arrested For Incest
Updated: 9:55 a.m. EST February 27, 2002
MOORE HAVEN, Fla. -- A Central Florida couple who are allegedly brother and sister are accused of keeping a casket containing the body of their infant son inside their home for 12 years.
The Glades County sheriff's office said that the casket was found in the home of Samuel Thomas Patrick and his wife Debra Lynn Patrick, who are also brother and sister.
Investigators said that they also found the Patricks' nine children and four grandchildren.
Acting on a complaint, authorities went to Patrick's home and discovered the casket of Joshua Patrick, who died of natural causes when he was eight months old. Detectives say the casket was exhumed from an Okeechobee County cemetery in 1990, but it's not yet clear when the boy died.
Samuel Patrick has been arrested on incest charges.
Deputies said that the family lived on a ranch owned by Lykes Brothers, where Patrick worked.

Investigators said that they also found the Patricks' nine children and four grandchildren. Did they find the blind kid with the banjo too?

This reminds me of a case from Michigan a few years back where a guy had 6 kids by his sister, and CPS was "monitoring" the situation. About 15 years ago I was working in the backwoods of southwestern Michigan. I noticed that all the people of this town were really slow and very odd looking. I asked a police officer if everyone in the area was related, and he said " Well, yes, all their parents are brothers and sisters. This is Incest Central".

Perhaps he forced his underage sister into the arrangement? Or perhaps she's turning state's evidence for a reduced charge? With nine kids and four grandkids, I expect there's not an under-age issue here.
What I want to know is -- who are the parents of the grandkids?

Upon being informed of the story, Places Rated Almanac raised West Virginia's desirability by 2 points while lowering Florida's by the same.

Wait a minute- if they have "nine children and four grandchildren", isn't it a little LATE to worry about filing incest charges???

Oh, I see, it's Florida. Figures.

"Already we knew that there was one room in that region above stairs which no one had seen in forty years, and which would have to be forced. They waited until Miss Emily was decently in the ground before they opened it.
The violence of breaking down the door seemed to fill this room with pervading dust. A thin, acrid pall as of the tomb seemed to lie everywhere upon this room decked and furnished as for a bridal: upon the valence curtains of faded rose color, upon the rose-shaded lights, upon the dressing table, upon the delicate array of crystal and the man's toilet things backed with tarnished silver, silver so tarnished that the monogram was obscured. Among them lay a collar and tie, as if they had just been removed, which, lifted, left upon the surface a pale crescent in the dust.
Upon a chair hung the suit, carefully folded; beneath it the two mute shoes and the discarded socks."---A Rose for Emily, William Faulkner

was found in the home of Samuel Thomas Patrick and his wife Debra Lynn Patrick, who are also brother and sister. Any truth to the rumor that they were emigrants from Kentucky????

This reminds me of a case from Michigan a few years back where a guy had 6 kids by his sister, and CPS was "monitoring" the situation.Oh, yeah, they "monitor" a lot. Uh huh.
We did have a case where a brother & sister did have a passel of kids (all the public dime, of course) and after #6 or #7, HSS did get off their butts. The DA eventually charged them & they ended up on probation. When she got pregnant with the NEXT child while they were on paper & it turned out that Uncle Daddy was the father, they did get sent to jail (in Uncle Daddy's case, to prison). Their parental rights were terminated. But this is a very case. It's very rare to see anyone charged with incest besides daddy getting his teenage daughter pregnant AND having the taxpayer's pay for the birthing expenses and support.

I believe you. I was in Clearwater a long time ago. Drove around through lots of places. I could see how some areas were.. . . definitely not what I'd called fashionable or elite....actually, pretty grimy and run down, people staring at you from behind masks . . . kind of creepy in those areas (this coming from a person who's used to seeing weirdos in downtown Los Angeles).

Why does the "Home" episode of "The X-Files" suddenly spring to mind?
