Website carries fresh messages of Osama, Omar
PESHAWAR, Feb 21 (PNS): A new Arabic language website offering material on the post-Taliban situation in Afghanistan has started carrying statements and messages by Osama bin Laden.
About five days ago, a joint condolence message by Bin Laden, his Egyptian lieutenant Dr Ayman al-Zawahiri and Taliban leaders Mulla Mohammad Omar and Mulla Mohammad Hasan was placed on the website. It condoled the death of Shaikh Hamza Dani, a Pakistani religious scholar who breathed his last in Karachi.
It was after some gap that a statement by Bin Laden, Mulla Omar and their two top lieutenants was released. Bin Laden, if he is still alive, has been quiet following the intense US bombing of his Tora Bora hideout in eastern Afghanistan. His last videotape was apparently recorded in early December last year. Mulla Omar hasn't spoken after the fall of his stronghold, Kandahar, in December.
There was no mention of the place from where the condolence message was sent. It was also not revealed whether the four men, all wanted by the US, were in hiding together.
If the condolence message was indeed sent by the four men, it could be taken as evidence that they were alive. It would also mean that they were in contact with each other and also with those who maintain the website.
A story carried by certain international wire services on Wednesday and attributed to a London-based Arabic language newspaper, Al-Hayat, was apparently also based on a report on the said website. The report said Bin Laden, al-Zawahiri and Mulla Omar were alive.
The www.alneda.com website was reportedly launched a few weeks ago. Alneda is an Arabic word meaning "the call". It isn't clear as to who is operating the website and from where. An Arab who had accessed the website thought it was being maintained and updated from inside Afghanistan. However, such a possibility appears unlikely in the post-Taliban period.
The website has been carrying past interviews and statements of Bin Laden and Mulla Omar. It also carries reports and claims of attacks against the US troops and the British-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) in Afghanistan. Details of al-Qaeda and Taliban prisoners handed over by the Pakistan government to the US were also placed on the pages of the website. Articles are also available to readers who surf the website. The site is in Arabic but certain other likeminded websites were planning to make available the material in English and other languages.
