Hear, hear, sir(or Ma'am)!
Some on this thread seem to have forgotten that conservatism need not, SHOULD not, equal rude boorishness. They should save the venom for those who truly deserve it. It's starting to sound like the French Revolution around here.

I don't think she'd fight her way into a coffin over her dead children. She likes it above ground I think.

The Queen Mum is a remarkable woman. She has endured such hardship and yet always kept her dignity.
How very tragic to see your child buried, seems unnatural, but I am confident she will conduct herself like the lady she always has been.
My prayers go out to the family on the loss of Princess Margaret.

royalty = tyranny Saaaaayyyyyy. Weren't you on the Committee for Public Safety? Yeah, I saw you at Robespierre's fundraiser. You and Madame DeFarge.

Watcher1...No people have better reason to feel antipathy towards the Royals than the Irish.
But I've met very many folks in Ireland who respect the Queen Mother.
To this day it's still reverently talked about of how she refused to leave London during the Nazi's blitzkrieg.
God bless her!

Well that's certainly cause to wish her hell fire for eternity.
I invite all those wishing this elderly woman ill, to ping me here at FR, if and when they ever have the misfortune to have an elderly member of their own family fall into ill health or suffer the loss of an offspring.
I'll do my best to think up some suitably callous remark about how they had it coming because of their shortcomings. This should be a great comfort to you.

D'accord. I have only recently reconciled myself to the existence (in ever-growing numbers) of Roundheads and Know-Nothings around here; I am only just now beginning to realize how many two-bit
sans-culottes there are on this site as well,
Monarchy is the ultimate form of conservatism -- not that the kind of penny-ante Jacobins you see knocking around here would know that.

Agreed!

As a second generation American from Britain I too say - "no bishop, no king!" But, having said that, I find the unkind remarks here for the Queen mother to be downright ugly. Especially after they played our national anthem in their chamber after 9/11. At least we could show some respect to the people of the U.K. during this time.

Good for her! She sounds like most of the geriatric crowd in this country!

Excellent history lesson. I hope some people around here understand the big-time clues you gave.

I have only read a few of the posts here before becoming utterly disgusted. The Bolshevic/ Jacobin faction at
la Republique libre is out in force. It might amuse them to know, if they had any historical sense, that the Founding Fathers themselves did not express anywhere near the hatred and class envy as I see here. And they had actually
fought against the monarch.
John Adams was our first minister to the Crown after HM granted independence, and, in his correspondence home, he had only good things to say about King George. But then the Founding Fathers were aristocrats themselves for the most part, and the franchise in their new republic was intended to extend only to men of good breeding and property. Contemplating the neo-Jacobins here, one can see the wisdom of their initial plan.

Re: our Jacobin friends . . .
I recently learned an interesting piece of trivia. Citizen Tom Paine was a "guest delegate" at the National Assembly in Paris and was called upon to vote for the execution of King Louis. He voted against execution, saying that many Americans regarded the king as "the author of our independence." Gouverneur Morris was also horrified at the proceedings.

She cannot order Prime Ministers around...No, but she could raise all sorts of holy hell (royal hell?) if she really wanted to, given the mere "Gentlemen's Agreement" status of their constitution. Just imagine if she ever refused to sign one of those new laws.
Ever watch "To Play the King" on Masterpiece Theatre?
