The article I read also said that it was possible for the Soviets to trick the airliner into flying into soviet airspace through electronic manipulation.

Pretty good trick - considering that flight on that leg of the trip would have been via Inertial Nav -

- that means the Soviets would have had to manipulate time, gravity and space in order to 'trick' the KAL007 flight director ...

the flight was from Alaska to Seoul Korea, it was only a little bit out of their way to get into soviet airspace. Somehow it got there, it was slightly off its planned path when shot down, could've been a mistake by those flying the plane or it could've been caused by soviet deception through electronic means.
