I don't think there was ever a doubt about how this would turn out. The kidnappers made demands that they knew would never be met.
They may have just created a martyr. Once Oprah has Daniel Pearl's 6-month pregnant wife on her show, you'll have every soccer mom backing up this war effort.
I hope in the end they made it quick and painless for the guy. I remember a terrible video linked in one on the freep threads of a russian being killed by muslums in Croatia that still haunts me.

If you wilfully travel to Pakistan to play a gig and your kidnapped should the Government come and get you? NO!
To: Don Joe
There is something to be said for a policy of going the extra mile to get any American back, even one who himself does not like his country
My problem with Mr. Pearl is not whether or not he loved his country, my problem is with educated men making reckless decisions in a time of war and risking other American's lives to rescue these adventurers from their own folly.
He was warned not to do what he then went ahead and did.
The Pentagon has from day one warned journalist's not to get cute in these dangerous lands, and also and perhaps more importantly.... to stay the "F" out of the way.
What parts of these warning did Mr.Pearl feel didn't apply to himself?

the wsj would be to blame too, but still, he should not have gone. im sure he was encouraged to go by the wsj. my apologies for saying i dont wish him harm in your post, i know you know, but many posters here seem to think i and others wish him harm because we say he's to blame for being kidnapped.

If it's true, then it's time to feed 10 to the sharks in Guantanamo Bay.
To: FresnoDA
Yeah, but most rumors are true, especially the Debka kind, and I still say we should nuke Karachi.

so true! kills me to see how easily we think its our military's responsibility to rescue the forewarned. the media always thinks its above everything, OUR MEN AND WOMEN IN UNIFORM HAVE MORE IMPORTANT THINGS TO WORRY ABOUT RIGHT NOW. it is NOT their responsibility to wait for another rescue mission in these times. our military willingly puts itself in the line of fire EVERY DAY!

The sad thing is that poeple who kidnap and murder are only detered if you aggressively lash out and make stiffs out of a few of them for every one of your people they waste.
I fully understand the problems of becomeing like them through acting as ruthless as they are. But I was taught in the military that not creating deterence invites more death of your people, and a much higher expense in security costs, or ransoms paid out.
Three terrorists from Gitmo dropped from the approximate height of the World Trade Center from a helicopter to return them to that part of the world is something that would send a message they would get.
Sad, but true.

thats a great idea! but why only three?

One must understand that we can never give in to the demands of a kidnapper. When we do, it opens the floodgates for them to kidnap again. If kidnapping no longer results in getting what they want, they HOPEFULLY will clue in that it is useless to kidnap again. Unfortunately, people have to die....but to give in to their demands is like us handing over all of our power to them.

My hubby and son, both USArmy are not over there yet, but we have a lot of friends that are.
Now, its up to the military to go and rescue Americans who were told to stay out of a certain area...put them in harms way to rescue people who can't abide by warnings of the SD.
To: tutstar
Fox is reporting that the kidnappers are demanding 2$million and the release of someone whose name I don't recall.
They also are demanding the letter "S" be stricken form the English language.... ( sorry old Steve Martin joke.)

So you're saying a white cop who patrols a black neighborhood, or a Hispanic cop who patrols a white neighborhood or any of the 100's of other analogies we could come up with here ASK for their punishment?
I give up. A human life is valuable...no matter what. We could argue about this all day long, but I really don't want to, ya know? My heart goes out to his family, and a child that he will never know, and a child that will never know his father, if indeed this first email is correct.
Can we just agree to disagree on this and just *pray* that he is still alive?

"But he did agree to meet with terrorists, alone. That was a big mistake." Isn't the "detached journalist who is disgusted with his own country" sometimes used as, how shall I put this... an excellent ruse?

She seemed to be proud of the fact that her husband wanted to create a dialogue with them. She struck me as being one of the "let's try to understand them" crowd and didn't really believe they were evil enough to do it. You nailed it. That is exactly what I thought.

I don't know if this has been mentioned already but last night before I fell asleep Whorealdo was on and he was going on and on and on about "The kidnappers should have asked for money, they had no chance at their demands but they should have asked for money" Now all of the sudden there are ransom demands. Maybe people should learn to keep their mouths shut for the safety of others.
